2 Dec 1949 // 74-gun HMS Implacable (ex French Duguay-Trouin, captured 1805) was scuttled off Ventnor, Isle of Wight, after many years as an accommodation/training ship. 2nd-oldest ship in the #RoyalNavy but alas, nobody was willing to pay for her to be restored. (Imperial War Museum A 25961)

The Spanish galleon Andalucia is making its way up the River Avon in Bristol county, England. I don’t know how long today’s journey was, so I have no idea how many miles per galleon they got.

Visiting the Andalucia today. Dunno whether I ought to lower that red and gold flag to replace it with the Dutch tricolour and proclaim the ship taken, or just sink her out of principle. Remember 1572!

It was incredible. I'm glad we extended the trip and visited Lake Titicaca, too. So much to see. The pic is from the Uros Islands of Lake Titicaca.

How much can you make out of a reed? If you're the Uru people of Lake Titicaca, quite a lot

Calling themselves Titicaca's true owners, the Uru build much of their lives using the totora reeds lining its shores

This includes ~120 inhabited, movable floating islands historically built for defense

Escaping Smuggler by Montague Dawson

‘Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk.’

High import duty on luxury goods during the 18th century resulted in violent battles between smugglers and the Excise service in British coastal waters.

I have some time this morning so I will introduce the project I’m taking part in. I am sailing on Saga Farmann, a reconstruction of the Klåstad ship. It dates from 998 and was found near the the site of Kaupang in southern Norway. Only 40% of the original ship survives #Saga25 #MedievalSky 1/
