The first question I asked myself when I left the classroom was:
What do I really have to offer outside education?

It’s honest — and vulnerable — and many teachers ask it, too.

When I lost my teaching position in July, I knew I needed a hiatus from public and public charter school education.

Not out of bitterness — but clarity.

Right now, autonomous and independent school models are the only spaces that feel sustainable to me.

This past July marked my second exit from public education.
The first was in 1999 and lasted 18 years.
Looking back, both departures shared the same pattern: mounting stress, shrinking self-care, and eventually, my health paying the price.

🧵 I follow several teacher-transition pages, and one question shows up more than any other:

“How do I know when it’s time to make a change?”

As a former teacher, I’ve asked it too.
Change doesn’t always mean leaving education — sometimes it just means finding a place where you can thrive.

Teachers thrive when systems work with them, not around them.
Time for collaboration. Real teacher voice. Workload that matches resources.
Systemic support isn’t glamorous—but it’s how sustainability happens.

Teacher burnout is one of the most discussed — and least unpacked — challenges in education.

We talk about stress, workload, and pay — and all of that matters deeply.
But the heart of sustainability goes deeper.

Current or former educator:
What does true sustainability look like to you?

Are we winning yet?
Breaking news: The United States economy will lose between $7 billion and $14 billion due to the federal government shutdown, according to a report released by Congress’s nonpartisan bookkeeper.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says the longer the government stays closed, the more costly the pause will be.
