Flock around, find out: Flock apparently decided to reinstall all of the ALPRs they recently took down in Evanston. One problem though: they didn't consult Evanston about it. The city sent a cease & desist letter, and Flock has "committed to promptly removing the cameras." Full story here ⬇️

Private surveillance vendor Flock Safety reinstalled all of its stationary license plate cameras in Evanston that had previously been removed, apparently

Last year, the anti-queer worship pastor Sean Feucht sued the city of Spokane, saying the city council had damaged his reputation. Today, the Spokane County Superior Court dismissed the lawsuit, saying Feucht’s claims were baseless.

Statement on Feucht Lawsuit Dismissal
A Superior Court judge granted a motion from the City, dismissing and ultimately finding no legal merit to multiple claims made by Mr. Sean Feucht.

I can’t help but wonder if the lack of a traffic unit for several years has anything to do with this.

This is a real problem in Spokane.

Tab fees are the only revenue source for resurfacing local access streets.

The revenue from tab fees is flat while costs of construction and damage done to roads (due to heavier cars) are increasing dramatically.

According to CARFAX, WA state had 593,000 cars with expired registration in 2025—about 1 out of every 10 passenger vehicles—and that doesn't even count the many thousands of vehicles illegally registered out of state! Assuming a similar ratio in the ST district, car tab evasion dwarfs fare evasion.

I don't know about y'all, but I wouldn't want the city of Spokane to absorb this water district -- why should city residents' water bills subsidize sprawl?
lpangborn.bsky.social
In case more evidence is needed, sprawl is a financially infeasible.

Each of the *only 26* houses "would be responsible for roughly $160- 180 thousand dollars if we were to take out a loan" to fix the water infrastructure.

The smallest lot here is over 1 acre, most are 1.75 or 2.

Heidi Ferre moved back to the Inland Northwest last year seeking more space for her family on Five Mile Prairie, but what was supposed to be a welcomed homecoming has turned into a daily struggle with failing water infrastructure.

Spokane was the first (and I think still only?) city in Washington to authorize the Pavement to People tax incentive, which cuts the sales tax on new construction materials to 0 if developers build homes on a vacant parking lot.

Now it's finally bearing fruit! 🎉🏠

Flock cameras are all over the county @lpangborn.bsky.social and I teamed up for some of the most extensive research and data-compiling I’ve ever done, more to come!

When you enter or exit Spokane County on almost any major road, your car’s color, make, model and license plate number are automatically captured by at least one camera made by the surveillance technology company Flock Safety.

Oh I feel you.

WSDOT has an idea for a program that would fund trail connections between cities — “cycle highways” — and I feel like this gap project would be a good candidate! engage.wsdot.wa.gov/cycle-highwa...

Yep, exactly. The driving speeds can be quite high, but the volume of cars isn’t awful.

The gap will require a ~$6m bridge over some railroad tracks, which is why it hasn’t yet been done

Centennial Trail <-> Fish Lake Trail connection project

Attended a public meeting tonight where I learned some details about the design of this critical connection between Spokane's most popular trails

PS the project also connects the Sunset Path and the South Gorge Trail, so that makes four! 4️⃣
lpangborn.bsky.social
Now only if we could get that gap figured out!
lpangborn.bsky.social
Phase 1 — the trail from Fish Lake to 5th + the Thorpe spur — will be constructed in 2026.

Phase 2 — the trail from 5th to Latah Creek — is scheduled for 2027 or 2028.

So by 2028, we can expect
- the Centennial Trail
- Fish Lake Trail
- Sunset Path
- South Gorge Trail

to all connect 🤘🎉
lpangborn.bsky.social
Phase 2: a new trail will be constructed down the bluff in/near High Bridge Dog Park, from 5th down to Latah Creek. This is steep AF so will require a handful of switchbacks.

It will include some lighting and an enhanced crosswalk on A Street.

(routing is approximate here)
lpangborn.bsky.social
As the area around Thorpe continues to be developed, active transportation connections are critical.

When both phases + some trail work a developer will do, residents will be able to get downtown *solely* on a trail. Pretty dope.
lpangborn.bsky.social
Phase 1 also includes a swooping spur from the Fish Lake Trail down to Thorpe Road, along with:

- lighting in the Thorpe tunnel (it being as dark and narrow as it is today means it's very hard for drivers to see cyclists)
- a way for cyclists to trigger a "Cyclist in tunnel" flashing light
