I’m a full time City Hall and politics reporter, but when I can squeeze it in, I LOVE labor reporting. And I especially love labor reporting that’s inclusive of and centers sex workers - because sex work *is* work and sex workers deserve labor rights. For a thread of my labor stories, scroll!

NEW: A copy of the arrangement with Eswatini that Mother Jones reviewed shows that the US has agreed to pay the only absolute monarchy in Africa $5.1 million to take in up to 160 ICE detainees.

Would be interesting to see if there’s any permitting/zoning strings the city could pull to make this very difficult or impossible…

LVT is land value tax. Simple explanation: property is taxed based on the value of the land, not the structure. Right now, a hotel or apartment building has to pay way more in taxes than an empty lot because of the value of the structure. LVT would disincentivize land speculation + parking lots

You get a certain amount of free stories a month - 6, I think? And then there are a couple reporters whose work is funded by grants that set free access of their work as a condition, so you can always read those reporters’ work for free!

Also obvi support great national news, especially the independent outlets. I’m a big fan of @404media.co, @motherjones.com, @propublica.org, @19thnews.org, @themarshallproject.org and @democracynow.org, among others!

So this person is clearly a troll. But let this serve as a reminder: support local independent news, not just national. We know the big stories in our communities. We know our communities. And we’re best equipped to tell these hometown stories of corruption!

Here’s a few things that didn’t quite make it into my story that are honestly crazy: the old Spokesman story, and the emails Jordin sent me from prison
An old spokesman review article titled “Bloomsday feats? The real story is Bloomsday feets” Email sent by Jordin to sellers Email from Jordin to Sellers after our interview. Email from Jordin to Sellers after our interview

On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo

Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

He WHAT from WHERE

From prison, convicted rapist Arlin Jordin has easily evicted tenants for decades. With Washington’s right-to-counsel laws, that’s all changing. This month, it all came to a head with Spokane's first right-to-counsel jury trial for an eviction:

Let it never again be said that a woman with no real reporting experience who fell for a Twitter account called "Official Antifa" cannot be the head of a huge news organization

@valerieosier.bsky.social says Zappone’s was a newer Odwalla but I can’t confirm. Telis’ looked like a hydroflask

Too dead on my feet to give a real assessment of tonight’s candidate forum, but one thing I did notice that might be of note to the BSKY politicos: three candidates brought reachable waterbottles. Zappone, Telis and Dixit - all Democrats. Dixit’s bottle had stickers, like a map of district 1

If you read/listen to any local news this week, please let it be this! I’ve been working on it for weeks and it’s some of the most insane shit I’ve ever written

I was planning on filing one anyway 6 months out from the policy so I’ll just do it a bit early

Gonna do my best to get the answers by tonight but this one in particular might require a public records request!

if i had a nickel for every time my journalism job led me to livestream video games to talk about local news, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.

TONIGHT (9/30) at 5 pm, Luke & Erin are going live on YouTube + Twitch and starting a Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign. They'll chat about local news like the upcoming election, the state of local media & a preview of a big story from Erin coming soon. Put your questions below so they can answer on stream!

There's a bald eagle wearing a wizard hat and a marmot with a magical circlet tiara. Both have shocked faces. There's a pixelated red, white and blue flag election-y background.
