🚨NEW PAPER🚨
We all know the 2022 energy price shock fueled the cost of living crisis. It also caused a profit bonanza for the very rich. We show the US reaped the largest profits ($377bn) of any country. 50% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A🧵 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
River or sankey diagram showing the allocation of profits from global oil and gas companies to quantiles of the US wealth size distribution via financial system intermediaries, such as asset managers, and categories of ultimate beneficiaries, such as business owners, pension funds and shareholders in listed companies. The scale is hundreds of billions of US dollars, and ultimately 50.4% of profits reaching the US personal wealth distribution go to the richest 1% of households.

We are producing a generation unable and (somewhat) unwilling to think, read and write without relying on tech controlled by some of the most evil people on the planet to tell them what to think, read and write and they don’t seem to see the dangers of this dependency even if we point it out

I cannot tell you how grim the AI in higher ed situation is. Many of the students have completely surrendered to letting AI do their homework, badly, I might add. How do you fix this? Truly, what the hell do we do, beyond what grading can address, which isn't a solution?

We cannot reach climate targets and a fossil-free world without addressing production of fossil fuels. Oil, gas, and coal needs to be kept in the ground. Colombia is leading the way to even imagining what that looks like as a political and economic process.

@mkblyth.bsky.social on why he writes for public audiences 💯 couldn’t agree more

as a much more junior researcher I also find I often get my better analytical thoughts & ideas when I’m not tethered to the academic article format (& its potential, often scarier readers, no offense)

The police are arresting hundreds of ordinary people for the “crime” of saying they oppose Israel’s genocide and support a group that is trying to stop British-made weapons from being used in genocide.

These people are not criminals, they are heroes. History will redeem them!

🚨 OUT NOW! Our new @science.org study led by @kohrathefog.bsky.social is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts of and inequities in outdoor air pollution exposure across all stages of the US oil and gas lifecycle: extraction ➡️ transport/storage ➡️ refining/processing ➡️ end-use. 🧵

🇵🇸BDS VICTORY!

The €13.4bn pension fund for PBU, a Danish trade union representing over 125,000 early childhood/youth educators, has announced it is FULLY divesting from companies involved in Israeli settlements: selling off all shares in Airbnb, Expedia, and Booking!

📣 NEW BLOG 📣

Are “phase-out clubs” the new frontier in global climate governance? 🌍

Florentine Koppenborg analyzed 6 major coalitions like the Global Methane Pledge and Powering Past Coal Alliance.

Here’s what she found out 🧵
lslothuus.bsky.social
Gas is much worse for the climate than previously acknowledged. The idea that gas is a "transition fuel" from coal and oil to renewables is a fallacy:

"Methane adjustments erode over two-thirds of the apparent post-2005 decline in US greenhouse gas emissions."

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that United States net greenhouse gas emissions have declined over the last two decades and are no…

We need increased renewables production. But without a drastic reduction in fossil fuel production, the planet will be none the cooler. We need to end energy addition and move to energy decommission. This is only possible if we ditch the cult of capital! www.theguardian.com/environment/...

nice thread outlining @lslothuus.bsky.social's new article on a geopolitical approach to fossil fuel phase-out

⚠️Who should phase out fossil fuels first?⚠️

As countries confront the need to ditch oil, gas, and coal to meet climate goals, one question looms:

Which nations should move first and fastest?

@lslothuus.bsky.social offers a geopolitical approach to answering this question

The EU is israel's biggest trading partner, they sell and buy weapons, fund research and science partnerships, allow israel into all culture/sport spheres. The only credible action is cutting ALL relations: full boycott, divestment, and sanctions on israel www.dw.com/en/middle-ea...

Stephen Bush is brutal on "magical thinking" from net-zero sceptics:

"What [they] seem to envisage is [a world where]…we & the planet agree to put all of this unpleasantness behind us & spend money on neither [cutting emissions nor adapting to warming]"

Parliament and Hansard have removed “We are all Palestine Action” from my speech on Wednesday 2 July 2025 — despite me saying it.

This is a blatant attempt to censor me and rewrite the record.

This is not how a democracy behaves.

We will not be silenced.
