Tax phobia is the defining characteristics of Ottawa municipal politics. Meanwhile, transit fares are amongst the most expensive in Canada and infrastructures are crumbling.

Everyone is feeling the impact of rising costs. That’s why affordability has been at the heart of our city budget.

Trop d’immigrants? C’est de la faute d’Ottawa! On doit réduire massivement l’immigration!

Just received my copy of Generations and Nationalism edited by @alainggagnon.bsky.social and @lturgeon.bsky.social 🤩 It includes a chapter by Antoine Bilodeau and myself on the impact of the welcoming context on immigrants’ relationship with the host nation (in the context of Québec) 🤓

Chanceuse!

Fair enough. It's an interesting question.

True. But I would suggest it's the same outside Quebec. The average required to get into UofT engineering is above 90% if I remember well (here's a document I could quickly find online)

4. ... to go to Cégep when I was an undegrad at McGill, changed my view about this institution when I became a prof. But again, I'd love to see studies about the impact of Cégep on the likelihood of going to university.

3. My comment was a fairly innocuous one: having and still teaching students from both provinces in Ottawa, I usually find students having gone to Cégep to be better prepared to hit the ground running when they start university (hence why me, who was jealous of my Ontario friends who didn't have...

2. It has long been known that Quebec has less students going to university, in part for complex historical reasons, but I'm open to the suggestion that Cégep is partly responsible for that (but would be curious to read studies and understand why that would be the case).

1. I wasn't defending Quebec's school system. I am no fan of the province's K-12 system where the "écrémage" really starts (I am a fan of the Ontario K-12 model in fact). And I wouldn't make causal claims about the impact of Cégep on the number of folks going to university.

Agree with your point that creating a cégep stream could be expensive. Still want to say that Cégep is amazing (as someone from Quebec who teaches in Ontario). Students are so much more ready for University after going through it.

2. MBC n’a cependant pas changé. Il est le même qu’il était dans ses écrits il y a 10-15 ans.
lturgeon.bsky.social

Perhaps more accurate would be that Ontarians don’t care much about provincial politics (that’s my experience after 25 years in this province). Friends and family in Alberta also seem to care much more about provincial politics.
