It's hard to convey my disgust & moral outrage at Trump & Rubio for killing hundreds of thousands

My team at Duke has spent almost a decade studying the pros & cons of health aid, which has undoubtedly saved millions of live but has down sides. We have a policy paper out soon on the topic.

“The stop-work order on U.S.A.I.D.-funded research has left thousands of people with experimental drugs and devices in their bodies, with no access to monitoring or care.”

The cruelty is the point.

Keep blasting these out. The message is sticking with Republicans: losing USAID will harm farmers, businesses, and universities in their states.
How much money will Americans lose if USAID is cut? Quite a lot, it turns out. I've made shareable graphics showing the ties betwen AID agriculture funding and each state. A public Google Drive repository is here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

As @jeremykonyndyk.bsky.social @refugeesintl.bsky.social said: The most important thing to read on today’s USAID news. Bottom line: none of this is legal.
The #USAID website has just gone dark, amidst reporting #Trump may try to dissolve it completely.

But #Congress established USAID in statute, and Trump can't unilaterally override a statute by executive order.

This NYT piece describes the devastation being wrought in the global health sector by the foreign assistance freeze. Let me say a few words about what this looks like in the sector I work in, often called democracy and governance (DRG). 🧵

First, this is illegal. USAID was created by the Congress...by a law. This is an illegal power grab. Secondly, we don't give aid out of the goodness of our hearts. We do it to advance our interests. It reduces our influence globally to eliminate it &. opens the door to our rivals.
USAID was created by an Act of Congress in 1961; it cannot legitimately be dissolved by presidential edict. Ofc how long this period of misrule will last is anyone’s guess.

Several databases at the #CDC have gone offline today. We know of some — Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, AtlasPlus. There are undoubtedly more.
If you are a researcher & use these databases, please share with @statnews.com how this will affect your work.
