I’ve been reading Norm Macdonald’s book lately and it’s just brilliant and lovely and sad and funny although there are a number of parts where I think come on man and it kind of ruins the spell I’m under. Here he is on the appeal of gambling: I remember a psychiatrist once telling me that I gamble in order to escape the reality of life, and I told him that’s why everyone does everything. But I’ve had plenty of wasted nights, after losses and bigger losses, to consider the question more seriously. So why the attraction? Most people would think it’s the wins that keep the gambler going, but any gambler knows this is not true. As you place your chips on the craps table, you feel anxiety and impatience. When the red dice hit the green felt with a thunk and you’re declared the winner and the chips are pushed toward you, you feel relief. Relief is all. And relief is fine, but hardly what a man would give the whole rest of his life to gain. It has to be something else, and the best I’ve come up with is this: It is a particular moment. A magic moment that occurs after the placing of a bet and before the result of that bet. It is after the red dice are thrown but before they lie still on the green felt where they fall. It is when the dice are in the air, and as long as they are there, time stops. As long as the red dice are in the air, the gambler has hope. And hope is a wonderful thing to be addicted to.

The razor Washing up prior to toppling over into an empty and unmade bed and out of nowhere I could feel a hair growing out of my temple. I could hear it too almost. Its sprouting. This is the kind of thing that happens backstage every microsecond of every day for every mammal that has ever existed but somehow I had caught it in flagrante delicto. When it must have assumed I would have had my defenses down. Coming home early from a business trip to a big surprise from your spouse. It sort of hurt on top of it all. My hair had never hurt me before now. It was as if a new tooth was coming in on the side of my skull. Or watching a pimple form in real time. Or a scar healing. Which was also happening inside of me so much slower than I needed it to. I’d only just learned the other day that our ears get bigger as we age. The human body is a prison with only the one exit but at least they made it minimum security. And the guards are always asleep.

The problem is, while many here inside the U.S. understood cultural messages of peace and prosperity to be at least partly aspirational, people living farther away often took the message a bit more literally. I’ve had numerous conversations with people from around the world who have told me, often with a tinge of frustration and/or embarrassment, that they had assumed that there really weren’t people in dire poverty in the United States. They had seen or read story after story depicting people who had problems, yes, but had been able to overcome those problems through grit and resourcefulness and heart. They had thought to themselves, “well, I have grit and resourcefulness and heart,” and figured, understandably, that this formula would work for them, too. This isn’t because they’re stupid or simple, it’s because propaganda actually works quite well. They expected challenges, but practically every piece of public-facing information about the United States told them that the challenges were basically navigable if you could, in effect, prove yourself worthy and take advantage of the ample opportunities that abounded everywhere. They expected a system that worked logically and rewarded effort fairly. And many came to find too late that this was more of an ambition than a reality. It is an acutely difficult decision to leave everything you’ve ever experienced behind and launch yourself into the unknown, and the more you can convince yourself that you do know what awaits and that what awaits will be better than what you’re leaving, the more you can actually commit to your decision. That means that countervailing evidence is likely to be rationalized away.

It’s easy to feel completely disheartened by the words and actions of the Kennedy regime. This was never a society that fully affirmed our dignity and self-determination even at its high point, but as is often the case with social progress, it felt, albeit briefly, like there was nowhere to go but up back when we were in the middle of it. The institutional and spiritual damage Kennedy has done will echo beyond his time in office. A kid who is now where I was at the time of my diagnosis, lost and confused and struggling for an identity to guide them through all of that, will live out their life in the shadow of Kennedy’s hateful rhetoric and policies regardless of what happens next. It’s a sin to inflict that on someone now and it feels like a separate sin to allow it to continue to happen to a future generation. It is the worst kind of failure and disgrace to steal, from people like myself, a world where we can find meaning and love and participation in a human community after we were given the chance to comfortably grasp it.
