My not-evidence-backed theory: we spent the better part of a year where the most conscientious people stayed home while others went out. Conscientious people are like nuclear control rods preventing bad social reactions in group settings. By the time they reentered, it was too late: new normal.

I think used EVs are generally underpriced too--they're still priced based off of the old, ICE math in terms of dollars-per-miles-on-the-odometer. EVs seem to age better.

On audiophile forums you can read 1000 words to the effect of "this integrated amplifier is musical but not overly so, with a narrow soundstage and if anything an excess of clarity," and then at the very end they'll reveal they were listening to "'Human Clay' by 'Creed.'"

This is such a long and painful scene!!!

Just read two business books in a row (for work) that open—open!—with an anecdote about the author either giving a speech or publishing an op-ed. The effect is… less impressive than they think.

If a football stadium’s worth of people in three midwestern states voted the other way we’d all be having a very different Thursday right now.

Sometimes I’ll find myself in a rare good mood. Then of course I’ll inevitably Remember What Is Happening

They do this all the time. If I were the journo I would simply ask “did you see the speech and/or tweet” first, before demanding a reaction. That is what I used to call “setting a trap” back in my Connect4 days

Dean: The president is unhinged

Johnson: A lot of folks on your side are too. I don’t control him

Dean: Oh my god, please. That performance in front of the generals.

Johnson: I didn’t see it.

Dean: Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing.

Remember when Obama "disrespected the military" by performing a salute with a coffee cup in his hand? It was like a month-long news cycle.

Trump to a room of generals: "I've never walked into a room so silent before. Just have a good time. And if you want to applaud, you applaud."

you get one word to describe the US Supreme Court and you go with something that sounds like it's from Tron: Ares
NYT headline reading: 'Hypercharged' Is the Only Word for This Supreme Court

CHOTINER: ...and how fast does your Maserati go?
JOE WALSH: One eighty-five.
CHOTINER: What's the status of your driver's license again?
WALSH: I lost my license.
CHOTINER: And now?
WALSH: ...
CHOTINER: I want to hear you say it.
WALSH: ...and now I don't drive.

What I love about going to bed early to get a good night’s sleep is how you thrash around in bed for an hour that could more profitably have been spent watching television.

This is incredibly interesting and would seem to have ramifications for other participants in the wave of corporate acquiescence.

(Don’t know how or if this applies to archbishops; out of my depth.)

A football stadium's worth of people across three midwestern states voted the wrong way and now this is happening. Insanity inducing.

As a Pynchon-head who's yet to read Vineland, I was gonna try to squeeze it in before seeing One Battle After Another. But it's a long book, which means I'd prob miss the movie in theaters. And after this @thehighsign.bsky.social review, I feel like that would be a mistake. slate.com/culture/2025...
