My theory in 2016 was that a deal was being made. The US would let Russia invade Ukraine, and in turn Russia would not protect Iran from Israel. That appears to be accurate, unfortunately. What folks need to grasp is Trump is a transnational actor. He is a Russian asset, but that's not all he is.
