Thank you for putting it into words better than I was able. Somehow they, by trying to vary the structures of classes, made them play more samey than the AEDU structure

Honestly, what Essentials actually was, was what the Tome of Battle was to 3e: stealth testing of the next edition's mechanics. You look at the Essentials class structures, then the 5e ones (and the playtest materials), and you see stuff that even if it wasn't the same, it rhymes.

The math absolutely should have been fixed, but Essentials was boring, more than anything. Having played basically every 4e and Essentials class at least a little, Martials in the essentials book were boring, gone were the fun choices, attack forever, maybe pick a stance at the start of a fight.

Ah yeah that was awkward, I only ever used the character builder, where they were entirely different options at the Class level, so I think that's a distinction I never fully internalized.

I'm pretty sure that was already there? 4e classes had specializations which added special riders onto specific skills since the beginning, at least.

As someone who was really into 4e, my problem with Essentials wasn't that it was "4.5", that's the Monster Vault, a huge fix to all the monster math, but that it added back in a lot of the problems they took out (fighters just pressing attack while wizards get to do cool stuff, most notably).

I always thought that a viable grift would be counterfeitingthe really rare ones and selling them the kind of place people know theyre getting a knockoff but still paying enough that you make good money

i really wish people would stop falling for "sweet baby inc forces studiosto make games worse". Theyre a consulting firm, even if they had a mission statement to make every game garbage, a studio cant be forced to listen to them at all, even if hired. Consulting Firms lament that constantly.

honestly that other stuff gets you read as a woman even more than hormones a lot of the time. I don't care if people clock me as trans and im so bad at taking my hrt, but even just wearing the right clothes goes a long way day to day, and thats just long skirt girls shirt girls shoes and long hair.

You talk to them about other movies to convince him to watch something other than Heat and its really clear he thinks every movie is just Heat with a different coat of paint, wondering who fills in for the actors and thinks the most different the film could be is shuffling the roles and scenes a bit
