Well there's a good case for qualitative research and hands on interviews...

We think we're so smart these days but some of the best ideas are old. This paper has been a cornerstone for my work, almost 50 years old. If we had listened we would have done everything possible to make development more equitable and reduce vulnerability to hazards.

Taking the naturalness out of natural disasters - Nature
Phil O'Keefe, Ken Westgate and Ben Wisner argue the case that disasters are more a consequence of socio-economic than natural factors.

Disaster insurance reimagined by Jarzabkowski global.oup.com/academic/pro...

World bank and the EU have a number of excellent reports with solid data evidencing the big problem

But insurance need to be thought in relation to welfare states

yes this hasn't gained enough international attention. It's so important and remarkable these days that decolonisation can take place peacefully, through negotiated settlements, respect of the law, and the will of the people.

Les 855 #MortsDeLaRue de 2024 ne sont plus complètement anonymes, ni oubliés. La Croix publie leur liste, tel un monument aux morts. Cinq pleines pages !

🧵 Today I participated in a French 🇫🇷 PhD defence for the first time and it made me reflect on the various examination models: which might be the most scientifically robust, and which might be the most satisfying to the candidate? And is Germany the only place where the entire thing is also marked?

I loved the French one both as a PhD and an examiner. It's such a unique opportunity in academic life to have a detailed, in-depth discussion, in which people give so much of their time to a junior colleague in view of taking the PhD further. It's really a celebration of the commitment of the PhD

I can't find your description of the French system, so here it is: commitee of 5 to 8 examiners, including two 'rapporteurs' who authorised the viva. PhD presents their work, then supervisors compliments, and then detailed questioning of the committee generally totalling 3 to 5 hours.

changes can happen before (in the NL and FR). It happens that an examiner refuses the viva unless changes are implemented though it is rare and a sign of a supervision problem or 'politics' (disagreements between supervisors and examiners), but the role of the supervisor is to prevent this

New, from me: The Trump administration is killing Direct File, the free IRS e-filing tool.
Users love it, and it creates incredible value for the public.

It's the clearest sign that DOGE wants a government that serves private and not public interests. 🧵

Really worrying. Only individual solutions and failure to prevent risks. And increasing the problem via emission

Or just overwork? is this really necessary?

These days I am regularly asked how to interpret the backlash against climate policies, how did things go that wrong (many reasons ofc), and *are people simply not ready for climate action*

I keep on saying that this last q is a bad one bc it hinges on a wrong interpretation of whats going on.
