This boat-tailed grackle is singing so fiercely that he had to close his nictitating membrane. This image satisfies both #Sideprofiles and #BlackBirds themes for #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds

This stunning male bullfinch was #Grounded while hunting for insects in my backyard in Denmark, where they are called “dompap.” We use no chemicals in our yard, so it is a smorgasbord for wildlife.

#Wakodahatchee Wetlands is a magical place where wading birds raise their young from January to May. The wood stork chicks are delightful in April. Mom is proudly showing off her kids during a rare quiet moment when they aren’t begging for food #BirdOfTheDay #AboutTheKids #EastCoastKin #birds

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #QuietMoments. This roseate spoonbill is enjoying a quiet, windless morning, searching for breakfast in the mud at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. #EastCoastKin #birds

This curious cardinal landed next to me on a bridge, watching me photograph an osprey. Obviously I couldn’t resist capturing an image of him as well. For the #QuietObservers theme for #BirdOfTheDay.

So this might be a bit unusual for a typical #BirdOfTheDay entry, but it technically fits the #groups of 4 or more #birds theme today. This group of oxpeckers is providing parasite control on the Chobe River. #EastCoastKin #BirdsSeenIn2025 #Botswana

#NaturesPantry is the theme today for #BirdOfTheDay, I.e., birds interacting with seeds, etc. This juvenile purple gallinule is using its very long toes to balance delicately on reeds to nibble at their seeds. Circle B Bar Reserve Florida. #EastCoastKin #birds

For the #ScratchersAndPruners theme for #BirdOfTheDay, here is a glossy ibis preening (that’s what we call it on this side of the Atlantic 😊) at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, my favorite birding place in Florida. #EastCoastKin #birds

For #SuperSeabirdSunday, here is an African penguin at Boulder Beach, Simonstown, South Africa. They are also called Jackass penguins because they bray like donkeys.

Here is a Christmassy image of a great egret among poinsettias dining on an anole, for the #HeronsAndEgrets theme for today’s #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds Taken in my former backyard in Miami.

Among my #FavoriteThings are National Parks, mountains, autumn, and clouds. I got them all for today’s #BlueSkyArtShow theme. Yosemite National Park, California.

Either this black-bellied whistling duck is standing on one leg, or his legs are perfectly aligned. Either way, this is my entry for #DucksOnOneLeg for #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds #Wakodahatchee Wetlands Florida

For the #splashes theme for #BirdOfTheDay, here is a blue jay vigorously bathing in a rock depression puddle in Miami. #EastCoastKin #birds

This is a rare, white-crowned pigeon. They are native to the Caribbean and are threatened with habitat loss. A few also live in Miami, and birders travel from around the country to see them here. I got lucky to get such a clear image. For the #Pigeons theme of #BirdOfTheDay. #EastCoastKin #birds

I found this Giant Kingfisher on the Namibia side of the Chobe River. Perfect for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #AlansNemesis, i.e., #KingFisher. Not sure why anyone other than a fish would consider a kingfisher an enemy, but hope to find out. #EastCoastKin

The theme today is #SideViews for #BirdOfTheDay. In Miami starlings are beautiful but invasive pests. This starling stole a cavity nest built by red-bellied woodpeckers in a dead palm. This happens frequently and sometimes the starlings will kill woodpecker chicks in the nests. #EastCoastKin #birds

This is a very rare and endangered Florida Scrub Jay hoping to expand their numbers by starting a new family at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. #NestBuilders #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds

We usually don’t see #borbs in Miami- it’s too warm here, and woodpeckers are usually too sleek to be borbs. But this juvenile red-bellied woodpecker fluffed out his feathers enough to briefly become a borb. #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds

Here is another entry for #BirdsSeenIn2025 in Namibia. This is a white-fronted bee eater, seen on the bank of the Chobe River. #birds #Namibia

The best #songbird in my neighborhood is the spot-breasted oriole. They sing an evocative but short melody. Native to Central America, a few breeding pairs were introduced to Miami in 1949 and have an established but not invasive presence here. #BirdOfTheDay #EastCoastKin #birds

I’m a little late to this #BirdsSeenIn2025 project, so I would like to contribute some birds seen on my trip to Namibia this summer. Here is a yellow-billed stork in pink mating plumage searching for nesting material on the Chobe River.
