The Trump administration knew that the vast majority of the 230+ Venezuelan immigrants it sent to El Salvador in mid-March had not been convicted of crimes in the U.S. before it labeled them as terrorists and deported them, according to Homeland Security data.

(Published May)
Trump Administration Knew Vast Majority of Venezuelans Sent to Salvadoran Prison Had Not Been Convicted of U.S. Crimes
Homeland Security records reveal that officials knew that more than half of the 238 deportees were labeled as having no criminal record in the U.S. and had only violated immigration laws.

1/ The documents are clear: Lee Zeldin and his wife have two principal-residence mortgages, for properties in Long Island and Washington, D.C.

We’ve got the records 👇

D.C.: legacy.www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...
Post on X from EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. The text says: "ProPublica's headline is the definition of fake news. I have NEVER claimed more than one primary residence! In 2007, I acquired a primary residence in NY upon leaving active duty. That was my primary residence for the next 17.5 years. My primary residence then changed to DC this past year when I become EPA Administrator. I completed the process by the book, notifying my mortgage companies, insurance company, and local government that my primary residence was changing. These fake news hacks knew this BEFORE posting their bogus claim, but they just couldn't help themselves." Below the post text is a screenshot of a ProPublica post that reads: "Trump has targeted political foes for claiming more than one primary residence on their loan papers. But ProPublica found that at least three of the president's Cabinet members have done the same thing."

ProPublica identified 17 people who each shielded at least $1 billion in capital gains from the so-called Net Investment Income Tax.

Together, this small group, by collectively exempting more than $35 billion, saved about $1.3 billion in taxes.

How Billionaires Sidestepped a Tax Aimed at the Rich
Wall Street financiers were a clear target of the tax, but some, on questionable legal grounds, have claimed their outsized profits were exempt, sometimes avoiding hundreds of millions in taxes.

Throwing my cat into the ring for my city’s extremely fake “bike path mayor” race.
A lawn sign that says, “Vote Sterling for bike path mayor. He’d vote for you!” The sign is mostly blue with a white triangle cutting diagonally through it, and coming out of the triangle is a picture of a silver-and-black tabby looking eagerly and pleadingly at you.

Billy Long only lasted 6 months as Trump's IRS chief.

Sure, that's a short period of time, but not bad for a guy whose self-touted tax expertise appeared to come solely from a 3-day seminar.

From @propublica.org Dec. 2024:
www.propublica.org/article/bill...
Former U.S. Rep. Billy Long of Missouri, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named his nominee to head the IRS, touts his expertise in tax matters.
He advertises his credential as a certified tax and business advisor, and he adds CTBA to his name on his X profile. That profile encourages people to message him to “save 40% on your taxes.” But tax experts told ProPublica that they have never heard of CTBA as a credential in the tax profession. The designation is offered by a small Florida firm, Excel Empire, which was established just two years ago and only requires attendance at a three-day seminar. That is in stark contrast to the 150 credit hours and the rigorous exams required to become a certified public accountant, a standard certification for tax accountants.

THREAD: All over the country, immigration officers are smashing car windows to get at the people inside.

As we began tracking incidents, my @propublica.org colleague @nicolefoy.bsky.social and I had two questions: First, is this legal?

Second, is it, well, normal? Was this happening before? 1/

New from me: After Oregon’s record-breaking fire season in 2020, lawmakers wanted to map out which properties were most at risk. But anger from homeowners escalated quickly.

Misinformation got accepted as fact.

In this telling, Oregon’s hotter, drier climate isn’t the problem; the map is.
