A small Three Blue Hearts prequel! Max’s friend Ollie Mae’s family took care of an orphaned chimp before releasing her to a sanctuary. Ollie’s story was a separate book, before I squished the stories together & made her & Max friends in the same book. Here’s a letter she wrote to Jane Goodall.

Notepaper on a blue background w/ pencils & notepaper. Letter reads, Dear Jane Goodall, I’ve been writing letters to you for a long time but I never sent them. I told myself that I didn’t want to be disappointed if you didn’t write back or that I didn’t want to bother you because you’re so busy. And I know you’re busy, but I don’t really know if that’s the reason I didn’t send them. Maybe that was part of it and maybe it’s because I sort of knew what you’d say about Ramona. That she didn’t belong here. It always felt like she did belong here, so how can both of those things be true at the same time?
One thing we’ll disagree on. Ramona was my sister. Is my sister. We had the same parents, we lived in the same house, played on the same beach. Of course you know that human and chimp DNA is 98.6% the same. That 1.4% can’t make her not my sister. It isn’t fair.
Anyway, I’m sending all the letters to you now. I’m sorry I sound mad at you in some of them. I think I was talking more to myself

Letter continues: I can’t visit her, not yet. I want to. She wouldn’t understand, she’d think we were there to take her home. She needs time to get to know her new family.
But maybe you could go, just to see how she’s doing. I’ve put a piece of sea glass in the envelope with this letter. If you do go, will you leave it somewhere for Ramona to find? The staff there could help you find a good place, I bet. You’ll know when she finds it because she’ll do this excited little hoot-hoot-hoot sound. She can’t hold it in. It’s almost like a food hoot, but not quite.
I’ll visit her someday, when she’s older and has been part of her new troop for a long time. She’ll be the alpha female, I just know it. She’s too strong not to be.
I know this is a lot to read, all these letters I’ve written. But I really want you to know my sister. You’d like her. And she would like you.
Her name is Ramona, and she loves cowboy boots and sea glass.

The thing about people in prison is that they have all the time in the world on their hands and dont know how to spend it because there is not much to do in this place. A lot of guys succumb to the hardness and get lost in the sauce in a way with negative things. That is the 70% of offenders that keep coming back. The 30% is the guys that are doing productive things with their time like working, attending groups an classes, working on the real issues they struggle with and ART. I have a huge passion for art and I do my classes with anyone who has the desire to have fun. Most guys send the artwork to their children which is fire. I Have been locked up since I was 18 years old and I found what I am passionate about and I have been sharing it with everyone I encounter. I am now 29 years old and I want to share something with you from my heart. I would rather be in prison living the way I am living now Sober and clear minded for the rest of my life than go back to the way I was living when I was on the street. I do not have life without parole I get out in about 6 years but I feel freer than I have ever felt in my whole life. Thanks again. From @washingtonpost.com, on saying goodbye to Aquarium Pacific’s octopus, Ghost. She’s lain eggs, which means her life is winding down. The eggs aren’t fertilized, but Ghost will go through the same process as if babies were growing in there. She’ll forgo food & devote her final days to her eggs
