If the Minister for Education understands that X is violating Irish criminal law, why is the Department of Education continuing to use the platform?

Again, using X for political comms is not mandatory or legally required; a Minister could simply instruct their department to shut down the account.
Minister says EU AI Act could allow regulation Ireland’s Further and Higher Education Minister has echoed some of Seoige’s concerns this morning, but cautioned that Grok is particularly challenging to tackle as it is not the “primary tool”, rather it is part of a “publication tool”. However, James Lawless said that a business creating the type of images produced by the AI chatbot Grok had been “set up in someone’s basement” it would have been raided by the Gardai “the next day”. “As legislators, we need to get on top of this very quickly,” Lawless told reporters ahead of a Cabinet meeting today. Lawless also said the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, which is currently being introduced, would be an “opportunity” to help regulate the industry. Lawless said legislation that can deal with “cases that aren’t even envisaged yet” is needed as “technology will always evolve”. The response by the Irish government has been complicated by X having its European headquarters in Dublin, and the government has responded to the development with mixed messages. At first, Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan said the blame lied with the users who request the creation of the images, not with the application itself.

Flying in the face of climate change Sir, – Regarding Conor Pope’s article “How to maximise your annual leave in 2026 and hit the hotspots at the right time.” January 6th: This article is utterly irresponsible in encouraging readers to fly to four or five destinations throughout the year – given the climate apocalypse we’re facing if we don’t slash greenhouse gas emissions urgently and the fact that flying is the most polluting thing that the average individual does in terms of causing these emissions. There is only one reference in the article – and a very casual one at that – to the climate impact of aviation, where the author suggests that the reader consider a staycation in June “cutting down on your carbon footprint and saving yourself a few bob on flights and accommodation too”. If the author is going to include the cost of flights, he should include the cost in terms of greenhouse gas pollution too. For instance, that return Dublin/Rome flight may cost ¤179 per person. But in terms of carbon emissions, the cost is about half a tonne. Including the carbon pollution information would help readers understand the cost of flights to their future and particularly the future of their children, generations to come and indeed, and to people in Ireland and around the world who are at the frontlines of the crisis (like the people of Midleton, Co Cork). – Yours, etc, ANGELA DEEGAN, Dublin 7.

Letter in today's Irish Times highlighting the contradiction that travel is "responsible" if it is based on flying
Responsible travel? Sir, - Saturday’s article, “Lessons learned from visiting 59 countries”, is an echo-chamber of encouragement to those who continue to fly despite the climate crisis (Magazine, October 26th). Flying is a highly greenhouse gas-emitting activity. With so much disinformation and misinformation around climate change on social media, we badly need newspapers that are truly “in- formed and responsible”. - Yours, etc, CO’REILLY, Dublin 18.

This Government is apparently willing to sacrifice a livable future for short term profit. In just the last 3 decades, Ireland's aviation emissions have grown by 500% & this Government seems hell-bent on increasing them more. We must contact our TDs & Senators & tell them to keep the passenger cap!

The junction between Sir John Rogerson's Quay and the Samuel Beckett Bridge is one of the worst designed urban spaces I've ever seen.

The layout actively fosters conflict between pedestrians & cyclists, while prioritising cars above all else.
