I hope he's named it Asterisk, the thing that comes after the omnipotent.

Is David Fricke there? I don't think one can officially call it a music documentary without his presence.

Suspended from a butcher's hook and kicked in the head, maybe?

Ha! Fair point. Is there no chance of it siloing all the anger and desire to vote into something that feels important but has no real effect? If people get frustrated at the lack of change, they could take it out on a massive anthropomorphic sausage roll.

They've really missed a trick by not creating a Campaigns and Protests Chart yet.

I curse them for not having a tape or CD, then stream it. If there's a download option I'll pay for that, but never actually download it.

I despise the resurgence in records over CDs. I absolutely loved browsing and buying music before, but I don't want to go to shops that now have a far smaller range on offer to pay more than twice the price for an inconvenient format.

I don't like that assumption, because

a) I never read/listen to things *when* my friends recommend them. I have to browse and find things in my own time and get them when I'm excited about them.

b) Good music reviews are a pleasure almost entirely separate from both recommendation and shopping.

"just for one day," Victor whispers, eyes downcast, coughing blood as the credits roll.

Janet Jackson! I would advise dumping him on grounds of taste, but she's a *Scorpio*

The listiness does sound off-putting, though. It's something I dislike in a lot of band/artist memoirs, too, after the more interesting childhood chapters.

I guess it doesn't need to be broader to discuss how the interest in power and the ways it corrupts might fascinate teenagers rejecting their parents' rules and finding themselves with an audience hanging on their every word.

Does the book look at rock's interest in Nazism in isolation, or does it touch on the wider interest in dictatorships, totalitarianism, the military, torture etc? You rightly point out that they weren't dressing up as Mussolini, but they were singing about him.

The title is interesting. Are they disowning compilations 2-4?

Something something, Roquefort?
January 19, 2026 at 3:38 PM
Also, what were they meant to play? Presumably they did news updates every hour or so - should they have started sombrely, become more jolly in the middle of each hour and then brought it down again? Perhaps Steven would have liked a blanket ban on 'insensitive' songs like Clear Channel in 2001?

Damnit, there *is* a phone number. Now I sound crazy. I swear that everything else was true.

It's not just that the website is down today, either. It's been doing this to me for a few days, during which time some friends have successfully bought tickets.

"You will receive a response within 15 working days," i.e. after the journeys I want to book.

Thank you, I'd forgotten how brilliant this shit is and now I can't stop laughing.

"Bye KIDS, Hi HUNKS! - I fled family XMAS for a bonkathon in Spain"

"Monster trapped my poor Colin"

"I promise I won’t die, Mum"

There was also "This morning, it's black coffee. Last night, it was CRACK COCAINE." The story was framed as a woman moving to the city, trying coke at a party, falling into addiction & getting better, but it ended with "I still take coke daily, but I only do crack on special occasions."

One that has stuck in my mind for 20+ years, amongst the usual stories about who looked "stunning" and who looked fat in their bikinis, was "I got mauled by a mountain lion!"
January 16, 2026 at 4:20 PM
True, and I'd rather watch the old stuff. This idea could use a bit more work. I was imagining a really bland established artist being faced with a choice between innovating or angering fans by deleting their own catalogue to upload a crap rehash of the glory days.
