My mum, who is British, moved to Portugal before the Withdrawal Agreement kicked in, which means she is eligible for free treatment here and is a permanent resident there.

I spent last Christmas in hospital while my maternal Grandma died. My mum came back asap to help make arrangements. 1/6
Because ‘even if you have a British passport or have paid National Insurance contributions and taxes in the UK’ you may have to pay for your treatment, says the letter. (Though the hospital has already established that it knows who I am and that I’m eligible.)

Isn’t this pretty fucking vile? (4/4)

I'm reading Evan Dando's book, and there's a good anecdote about how, as schoolboys, the Lemonheads got their punk records directly from Tipper Gore. Jesse Peretz's dad edited The New Republic, and she sent him records to try to get him to publish a story about the PMRC. He gave them to his son.

Not content with inventing a cheaper taxi that stops at predetermined places and times every day, we're relaunching the Fox Sisters as you've never heard them before. For just £25 p/m, store your very own knuckle-cracking in the cloud and we'll play it back so you and yours never have to move on.

This is brilliant. It looks like something I would have made on The Sims, but they lose points for not having suits of armour flanking every doorway.

The frequency with which stories like this are coming out is why I did a 180 on the question of assisted suicide.
A woman in Saskatchewan needs surgery for a parathyroid issue and is being offered MAiD instead.

There’s no one in the province who can perform the procedure and the government won’t pay to send her elsewhere.

This is why disability advocates warn about assisted dying

For the past eight years Jolene Van Alstine has suffered from a rare form of parathyroid disease, normocalcemic primary hyperparathryroidism (nPHPT). It causes extreme bone pain.

I have my fingers crossed that Art Brut risk being sued by Metallica to make more "Masters of Pop Hits" jumpers, because my uniform is looking a little grey.

Zarah is wrong, of course. The conference, via Emily's skeets, has been an absolute delight. It could make a breeze block giggle.

I know I’ve said this before but I keep finding it very funny seeing people (mostly Americans) reacting to all this by saying “Wow Zarah Sultana needs to get out of that toxic party and join the Greens”, like saying Keith Richards needed to escape the Rolling Stones because they had a drug problem
Chaos has engulfed the first 24 hours of the inaugural 'Your Party' conference in Liverpool, with Zarah Sultana boycotting the first day of the event, Jeremy Corbyn facing "witch-hunt" allegations, and an entryism row

I didn't intend to start the day subskeeting criticism of Carl Douglas, but not only is Kung Fu Fighting brilliant, its detractors would have to admit it's not even the worst Carl Douglas song with "Kung Fu" in the title.

I watched the BBC Dracula while drinking whisky during lockdown. At the start of the 4th episode, I thought "wow, weird decision to set this one in the USA...And where's Dracula?...This episode is pretty derivative of It Follows." It took me half an hour to realise iPlayer was set to autoplay.
Accidentally started watching Pluribis from episode 4 and was greatly admiring that it didn’t fuck around and got straight to it then towards the end I thought “wait when do they flashback to the whole setup” then checked and thought “balls” so now in two minds on whether to watch the first three.

I really hope I get to see Neil Young mark the occasion of his first show in Wales by playing his first show in Wales, backing himself.

Adored was a Pete Garner (or possibly Squire) melody. Mani played it brilliantly, and he improved it, but it's pretty much there on the 1985 version, before he joined the band.
Worth remembering that when you’re humming the greatest Stone Roses songs - Resurrection, Fools Gold, I Wanna Be Adored - you are humming Mani’s bass melody. Not Squire, not Brown, but the bass line

Terrible news

When I first picked up a cheap 1970s acoustic guitar with slightly rusted strings about an inch from the fretboard, the first things I tried to play were Mani's basslines.

I feel so sorry for his sons, losing both parents so young.

They aren't alike though. That comparison always seemed to be based on having two guitarists more than how they actually sound. The Strokes were more like The Cars, bits of the Velvet Underground and A Salty Salute by Guided by Voices.
