Not going to age myself by saying how long I’ve been following @m-r-glass.bsky.social’s work, but I will say it’s a necessary and mind-blowing read. It answers so many questions about real estate, race, debt and injustice in US suburbs—and most importantly, it asks the right ones. Get it &teach it ⤵️

I was delighted to join Jenna Pittman on @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social for a conversation about CRACKED FOUNDATIONS (@pennpress.bsky.social). We talked real estate, inequality, and how the suburbs still hold a cherished place in American politics.

There is a Georgia highway I know well, having ridden its ribbons of asphalt as a child, a teen, and a home-for-a-visit adult for half a century.

It’s a history of racial capitalism.

Phase 1: Pull value from the soil through enslaved labor and unfree sharecropping labor, to the mid-20thC
Engraving of enslaved people carrying cotton to gin along a row of cabins. Not exactly sure if my highway ran through cotton fields or not, but the agricultural base and connection to enslavement is clear.

Nick Juravich tonight at Teachers College, on his great new book on “how schools shaped not just individual students through instruction, but also the distribution of employment opportunities, paths for political participation, and the process of community formation in the city.”

Beautiful essay, and a reminder that this madness has quite recent historical precedents.

“Now the attacks feel like yet another manifestation of the relentless self-preservation of the powerful…”
