I give this a solid 5 Weepies out of 10.

Spencer is great. The music is surprisingly good. Reynolds and Farrell actually play well together and have good chemistry. The plot is predictable but a nice update to Bill Murray's 80s Scrooged. The Muppets still reign supreme for adaptations, however

(Spoiler)
The weirdly corporate after life at the end is almost Existentialist and could be read through a very from lense of modern corporate life and purgatory. But I still wept through 3 hankies at the redemption arch

And so, overall I satisfied with my catharsis

Reynolds and Farrell have pretty good chemistry together and Farrell's physical comedy and gormless moments mostly worked here although some of these moments gave me flashbacks to Elf, which I think worked better overall.

Again, Spencer both grounds these moments & gives them more emotional depth

There were aspects of the plot that I find incredibly dystopian, especially right now. I wasn't sure I could finish because Reynolds ruthless Scrooge was so on the nose with his cold blooded and effective marketing spin.

Octavia Spencer really saves that by being the real hero of the story

I've just made up the Weeping Scale so I don't know what that means either. We'll learn together. And if you find the holidays weird, painful, and fraught, I hope you'll join me for this unhinged cinematic catharsis

This year, I've decided to share my, ahem, reviews of the holiday films I consume. The good, the twee, and the unfortunate.

And yes, I weep through every single one of these films, regardless of comedy content, so I'll be rating them on the Weeping Scale.
