Lawyers need to be more scared of being reminded that they are officers of the court.

Judge: How could bringing in NG from CA not be in direct contravention of TRO I issued yesterday?

DOJ: TRO related only to Oregon NG

Judge: You are an officer of the court. Aren't defendants clearly circumventing my order?

In 1920s California, two people in need of healing find strange refuge in a house with a mind of its own in an enthralling fantasy by the author of A Thousand Recipes for Revenge.

Grieving Hollywood writer Fayette Wynne arrives in Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1926 to finish her latest project in peace. All alone, save for the preternatural sourdough starter her family has nurtured for years, Fayette is also resentful. The proven healing powers of the bread made with her starter were insufficient to save her beloved mother. For Fayette, it’s time to try and push past the pain and anger and move on.

Then, during a violent storm, Fayette saves rising star Rex Hallstrom during a moment of crisis. Their a peculiar cliffside house, its door flung open as if beckoning them. Sentient, curious, and lonely, it recognizes in Fayette a unique magic even older than its own.

In the days that follow, as a friendship grows between Fayette and Rex, they discover local legends surrounding the isolated It appeared in the span of a single night, its cursed origins said to be Hell itself. But for two souls who need to move forward, it provides unexpected comfort and hope. In fact, Fayette and Rex have never felt more alive. Neither has the house, whose mysteries are unending and whose wicked history may be too powerful to ignore.

I have gathered *almost all* of the book recommendations from that episode into a list on @bookshop.org. The caveat is that a handful of the books are not available there. When time allows, I'll create a proper list with all the books and links. Happy reading!!

Last week, I had the most incredible time with my dear chums @mbkellyauthor.bsky.social and @tmkutawrites.bsky.social discussing Sapphic book recs. Clearly, I need to have both of them back or start a new podcast so that we can have more unhinged book chats

I did a playlist for Queen Demon, which will be out Tuesday October 7 in hardcover, ebook and audiobook (narrated by Eric Mok). Published by Tor Books, edited by Lee Harris, cover art by Cynthia Sheppard, design by Christine Foltzer and Greg Collins.

Cover of Queen Demon. Kai is dressed in a teal gold-trimmed coat over a long dark purple shirt, wearing a dark veil scattered with gold coins in his long dark hair. He's in motion, running or leaping toward the lower left corner of the cover.

#Booksky Interesting and thoughtful take on why MURDER IN THE TITANIA by Alex Acks is good storytelling, but not alternate history. We don’t market it that way, instead plugging it as steampunk/Weird West, but it’s great to see someone put the time into analyzing one of our books!

In addition to her writing, Piper does do some limited narration. Don’t miss out on her narration of Excuse Me, this is the Quiet Car short story by Cara Mast as Lalana Dara on Cast of Wonders.

This always sounds good until we find out who is considered toxic.

Like is funding a legal campaign to erase an entire group's existence & posting triumphant selfies every time you manage to hurt them more or less toxic than the people who are hurt being upset about it?

These are vital questions!

I cannot stress sufficiently how uncomfortable that makes me, down to my genetic code, but I would rather be forthright than polite when dealing with people who want to do away with my human rights and call that "care and good governance."
