Despite many friends who are big Firefly fans, I dislike it for reasons beyond Whedon as a person. First & foremost, the omnipresent racism in the series (Black hair as a punchline, Orientalism rather than primary characters of Asian descent, etc). I also really didn’t like how it handled sex work.

A dog gave birth while we were eating.
This restaurant has great food, kind servers, and a beautiful view. But they allow dogs inside the restaurant, not just in the patio area but upstairs as well. I was having a fantastic time until a persons dog started giving birth at the table next to us. The patron with the dog didn't even realize it, someone at the table next to us had to say "excuse me your dog just gave birth". I watched the dog finish giving birth, eat the umbilical cord, and then walk around with afterbirth on it, and it made me so nauseous. The woman after getting some help from the staff (getting a to go box for the puppy) seemingly sat back down and finished her meal. Unsure what happened after we left but am not happy that situation even happened.
Giant health violation. She should've been out of there.
There's even an outdoor space at the restaurant. Turned an amazing meal into a really gross experience. And for $140+ not worth it.

I am a vocal long time Fleet Week hater for many and varied reasons. We seriously don’t need to do it. We can stop.

No Blue Angels at Fleet Week this year, but: “Canadian and Colombian ships will arrive as planned, and the Canadian air force’s Snowbirds will headline the air show, marking their first San Francisco appearance since 2017.”

Blue Angels not expected to fly at SF Fleet Week this year
The last time the Blue Angels were grounded was in 2013.

Ever since I learned about this study enrolling I have been eagerly awaiting the results. Researchers in Uganda took a centuries-old cultural practice mothers carrying babies on their backs in cloth wraps and turned it into a public health tool. You got to love it!

Recruiting a population of college students is one of the easiest ways to conduct research but that’s also a very limited demographic more likely to have fears and anxieties about a pregnancy in their own life.

While I agree that the pregnant body is perceived as less human in society (thus the sheer amount of punitive laws, judgement, entitlement to control behavior, medical care, homicide rate, etc) this study and its methodology isn’t sitting well with me.

Cover Up That “Baby Bump”: Displaying the Pregnant Body Undermines Women’s Perceived Humanness - Sex Roles
Today, famous and everyday pregnant women can be found posing on social media with their “baby bumps” exposed, a phenomenon meant to reflect and advance body positivity. But do such acts impact how women are perceived? We examine this question in the context of research showing that when women’s sexual and reproductive features are revealed, others objectify them, perceiving them as less human. In three studies, we examined perceptions of humanness (i.e., warmth, competence, and morality) when a pregnant famous Black woman (Rihanna, Study 1) and an unknown White woman (Studies 2 and 3) were depicted posing with their bare pregnant belly on display, compared to their pregnant belly covered. In all three studies, the woman revealing her pregnant belly was lower in perceived humanness, and in the final study, these perceptions contributed to the belief that she would be an unfit mother and should be denied financial support. Our work suggests that while women’s displays of their pregnant bodies may be motivated by body positivity, reactions to such displays echo responses to revealing menstrual status or public breastfeeding and may ultimately reinforce a cultural milieu that subtly punishes women for making visible the realities of their reproductive bodies.

An investigation by @tinavasquez.bsky.social follows the story of Isabella, who was granted a temporary farmworker visa to work in the U.S., promised $12.67/hr. She did not know yet that she would be chewed up & spit out in the gaping maw of the American agricultural machine like countless others.
She managed to get a farmworker visa. Once in the U.S., she endured abuse.
A Prism investigation reveals that women are routinely shut out of the H-2A program. Those who get in report doing non-agricultural labor and facing sexual violence and trafficking

People acting like Disney being fascist is new should go back and read the company’s history. Disney himself was a Nazi-sympathizer and only got into the US propaganda film game because he was also a staunch Nationalist. Before that he literally hosted dinner parties for Nazis.
