I guess it's frustrating that "reading the news makes me upset" is almost always met with "well okay then just stop reading the news" (as if you could escape it) instead of "yeah. it's bad. let's brainstorm what to do about it. let's plan this out"

If you dislike something or it makes you uncomfortable, that’s okay! But you don’t need to let the creator know. You don’t need to let anyone know, honestly. You can just ignore it and move on with your life. Fandom is about enjoying the things you like, not bashing the things you hate.
