Beter, an unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1967, died Saturday following a heart attack at his home in Bethesda, Md. He was 65. Beter, a Huntington native, announced himself as a Democratic candidate for governor in 1967 and three weeks later switched his registration to Republican. He collected 1,844 votes against current-Gov. Arch Moore's 106,000 for the Republican primary. Between 1961 and 1967, Beter served as a counsel to the U.S. Export-Import Bank after campaigning for John Kennedy during the West Virginia presidential primary. During the 1967 gubernatorial race, Beter was known for his tuxedos and mink bow ties, a campaign song titled "Do Good and Be Good," and a platform that promised sweeping reforms, many to help disabled coal miners.
