Scots academic lawyer based at the University of Strathclyde. Interested in access to: a) land; and b) justice. Don (in the fitba sense). Blogs a bit. Demi-Gael.
A public access to land sign for Halloween.

A new photo entry to my folder of dubious access signage, albeit I can be happy that this one is firmly tongue in cheek.

Fair enough. There are tickets available in C3 still, FYI (see image from the online shop), so if you bought however many else you need directly I'm sure they'd be able to sit together on the night (it won't be 100% attended).

And lo! There was a chance! What a shootout! What an organised (if at times riding our luck) performance. Scenes. Here's a photo of the boy in front of me conjuring fire in the celebration. #fitba #COYR

And the final hill. A bit of a construction site at the top of this one.

Four photos from the first Munro of the day, which it's fair to say was not the most taxing.

Went up three hills. In the old country, I used to post N, W, S and E photos for people to #namethathill. Here's summit photos from one of them.

Great to attend an event hosted by the Strathclyde Institute for Sustainable Communities (with the British Institute for Energy Economics) at the uni tonight, on powering a community energy revolution in Scotland. Prof @matthannon.bsky.social kicked us off, then passed the baton to Prof Karen Turner

Happy to confirm operation Boxing Day risotto for the Combe family was a success (one made with turkey stock, another with a cube of veggie stock). Photoed: the wee tub of leftovers, for my lunch tomorrow.

Just in time for Christmas, a special issue of the Juridical Review has been published. (I sit on the editorial board.) This special issue on Moveable Transactions Reform considers the Moveable Transactions (Scotland) Act 2023, which comes into force April 2025. The perfect read for the holidays.

So this was me on Thursday, where I was part of a cracking panel during an afternoon plenary session at the aforementioned heritage conference at Strathclyde. Great to share the stage with Professor Janeen Carruthers of @uofglaw.bsky.social and Dr Thomas Muinzer from Aberdeen.

Went to a gig at the Usher Hall last night - Jason Isbell and his band. Excellent stuff.

Today, it's the Stair Society annual lecture, by Cynthia Neville, entitled "March Law as Auld Law in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Legal Traditions". In the photo she is introduced by Sarah Wolffe.

Today I'm attending a seminar to honour the contribution to scholarship of Professor Kenneth McK. Norrie at the University of Strathclyde, entitled "The Person in Scotland and the World: 40 Years of Private Law Reform", supported by the Clark Foundation. Well done to colleagues for organising this.

So I went to the Mòd in Oban and I took a grand total of three photos. One was of Major Duncan McCaig, one of the M'Caig siblings that gave us so much glorious litigation (about trusts & wills etc.): when I saw him in our pre-performance rehearsal space I just had to get a photo. I regret nothing.

So there's a lot of awful things happening in the world, but here's a photo of the dhal I made in my slow cooker today which I'm pretty chuffed with really. #tweetyourtea

Some intriguing landscaping next to the Scottish Parliament/Holyrood Park, with these desire lines being formalised/reinforced. I've heard tell of this happening on e.g. university campuses when new buildings are made, and before programmed paths go in footfall is instead awaited.

Au contraire, Stornoway Gazette, I think you'll find Seonaidh is not hitting the high note: he is clearly playing a low A.

Given it's a ferry terminal, I suppose I'll allow this "NO ACCESS TO FORESHORE" shtick, but I was primed to tell anyone who asked about the common law ius spatiandi and/or statutory rights of access if anyone has asked.
No-one asked.

Great to attend the launch of the Strathclyde Institute for Sustainable Communities (SISC). Professor @matthannon.bsky.social - Director of SISC - introduced the day, and explained that this is the right time, the right city and the right university for this institute.
