They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

This film is a must-see. Dazzling performances all around.
Armageddon Time is a coming-of-age tale with deeper meaning. Set in 1980, the film explores the sociopolitical undercurrents that fuel racism and classism in our culture, and it's hard to ignore their present-day implications. Climbing the ladder shouldn't be at others' expense.

One of my favorite family traditions at this time of the year is listening to Al Maitland's classic reading of Frederick Forsyth's "The Shepherd" on CBC Radio: www.cbc.ca/radio/asitha...

Ten years ago, I spent time photographing Syrian people living on the absolute margins of society, holed up in tented encampments and abandoned buildings, glued to their phones and praying for things to change. Let's hope that the people who suffered so terribly under his rule may find some peace.

Early AI image generation, in all its imperfections, seemed to me like it could steer us towards a clearer view of the tropes of visual representation that inhabit modern documentary photography. Sadly, that moment has passed, and we inch closer and closer to a new kind of mechanical reproduction.

Over the past century, a visual language has emerged that informs but also constrains how documentary photographers depict the violence and repercussions of armed conflict. Witness W. Eugene Smith's indelible photograph of a marine in the Saipan Mountains cradling a wounded child:

Back in 2019, I started playing with nascent AI image generation tools, like Google's BigGAN. The results were predictably bizarre, but nevertheless demonstrated an uncanny truth about armed conflict - that war is fundamentally disfiguring:
