Not saying that all regulation is bad, far from it, but I do think we need to modernize regs to meet current goals. For example, conservation may have been a key goal in the 70s, but now it should be fighting climate change - and that may require building wind farms even if they harm a few species

I think this can be is often true, but I also think we undervalue the costs/harms of inaction. E.g. if a regulation prevents high density market rate housing from being built, that might protect one community from being displaced but contributes to the overall housing shortage that hurts all

Love Rep. Casten’s thread but disagree entirely w this. Abundance rightly diagnoses that we have a real problem building things that make a difference re climate - solar/wind/etc. Regulation that’s outlived utility isn’t virtuous - we should have a big govt with state capacity to build things fast.

21. And before team Yglesias responds by saying "yeah, but it's bad politics to run on climate and energy"... I'd point out that I've won 4 elections in a very purple district running on climate and energy. Pro-tip: leadership is possible! You don't have to be stupid to win!

Agreed - another strong tactical move from the Dem. Leader here. I get it’s inside baseball, but he’s clearly been pretty good on strategy all year

It’s interesting to me how many usually data-loving folks refuse to accept that moderation is something the voters broadly want! Just because you may not wish that to be true does not make it untrue, example 1000 here. (Fair to ask what is a moderate, but clearly it matters to voters)

I feel like it's gotta be stressed that the scale of American traffic violence is a genuine catastrophe. It's one of the biggest killers of otherwise healthy people and it totally erodes the viability of communities. It has to be treated with urgency

I don’t disagree with this, but on balance I don’t really care about it being predatory tbh? Like that inequity is worth the lives saved/damage avoided.

Wealth is always an unequal factor - there are cases where that’s worth halting something but this doesn’t feel like one

Many people are asking if the decision to fire Rodney Terry was a mistake … Sean Miller not helping his case today!

I think it’s reasonable not to be that interested in the “coach has an affair” style of rumor until it boils into something official - as has been mentioned, the batting average on those is abysmal.

I also don’t care a ton about affairs in most cases? This is the exception, not the rule

This is exactly how I feel - graduated last spring and I adored my four years. UT was wonderful to me & opened so many doors — which is what makes this right wing assault on the institution so heartbreaking. And to what end … unironically wishing UT would just get back to trying to game US News

It’s like someone took polls, and asked “what if we cranked all the issues with this up to 10?”
