Recently had the chance to do a little GIS analysis for a KQED (NPR) Bay Curious podcast on the Stairways of San Francisco. Should have been a story about the triumph of GIS, ended up being more about the failure of geospatial data 🙃 But it was fun to do anyway!

Not just copyright-free stuff, there are several stores that have been selling in-copyright material from the Rumsey collection for many years. His stuff is all over the place. Part of the cost of his open approach I guess. But def supports the thesis that "old maps sell".

I have to confess something, as a cartographer who has loved maps and map making since childhood... I really don't care for the Tolkien maps as published w his books. They get way too much adoration in our profession 🫣 His personal/working sketches are far more interesting and organic. #cartography

Map 4: The Visible Bay Area.

Being in the bay area should mean you can at least see bay water, right? This is the Bay Area viewshed. Pixel lightness is related to how much of the bay you can see. Dark areas can't see any bay water!

If Santa Cruz Co is not Bay Area, then nothing further away than its closest part (20441 m from south bay water) should be Bay Area. This is the 20441 meter Bay Area buffer.

The established co's that make up the Bay Area. Based entirely on the fact they touch bay water, granting bay area-ness to distant non bay locations. Notice Santa Cruz Co is not included, despite having land much closer to the bay than northern parts of Sonoma Co.
