My latest SubStack piece - Assessing vs Assessment: Are They Really the Same?

In higher ed, assessment and assessing aren’t the same, yet we often treat them as if they are. What happens when we rebalance the two?

Digital tools have reshaped higher education, offering new ways to learn, but also new ways to cut corners. Generative AI has magnified long-standing cracks in assessment practices, raising an urgent question: are we truly assessing what matters?

"Why are apps rooted in gamification and behaviour design – techniques developed to maximise screen time – now standard in classrooms? Why is a child’s future now assumed to be digital by default?"

Worrying questions, relevant for #HigherEducation, too:

Have you watched the #AusOpen live stream on YouTube? What did you think?

I have just written a piece for The Conversation about why the Australian Open’s YouTube live stream looks like something straight out of Wii Sports.

Why the Australian Open’s online tennis coverage looks like a Wii sports game
Replacing players with virtual avatars was partly a necessity due to exclusive media rights deals. But beyond that, it presents some opporunities.

Matt, this wasn’t directed at you, just a general comment. These alternative grading approaches aim to prioritise “assessment for learning”, which isn’t new. Whatever we call it I hope we see greater integration into education that reduces the reliance on grades as the primary “measure of learning.”

It’s interesting how, in this context, many interpret the “un” as completely eliminating grading. However, it’s more about “undoing,” rethinking, or, as Jesse Stommel puts it, “raising an eyebrow” at current grading practices.

The late, great Jerome Bruner reminded us that we want students to "experience success and failure not as reward and punishment but as information." This insight is so essential that I've come to call it Bruner's Law.
