For the first time in many years I took the time to work on a personal map, going back to the roots, and it was good.
I hope you will enjoy the result.

Y'all, I am VERY excited to introduce you to one of my new favorite Tolkien artists: Kay Woollard (1924-2008).

Woollard first read LotR in '79 when she was 55. From then until her death, she was heavily involved in Tolkien fan culture, contributing illustrations to Tolkien Society publications.

A🧵
A recursive cover of Amon Hen, Bulletin of the Tolkien Society, with a hobbit reading a copy of Amon Hen with a hobbit reading a copy of Amon Hen, and so on A bulletin titled "A Long-Expected Party Progress Report: Preparation" depicting many hobbit chefs baking pies Christmas card of a Hobbit couple carrying their child on their shoulders through a snowy landscape A postcard titled "A Slumbering Pedlar" showing a sleeping Hobbit pedlar resting on his pack of goods

Thank you so much ! I'm trying my best to balance beauty and functionality in my maps. Glad to read it's bearing fruits. 😉

Thank you very much, Ben !

That's something I always enjoyed with maps. It brings me back to the gamebooks I grew up with.

Something from the ol' comfort zone for the beginning of autumn
A horned jousting helmet with some autumn leaves in the background and sun icons on three sides.

I've had the honor of creating the cover art for "Sacrebleu !", the first french adventure compliation for Shadowdark soon to be published by @arkhaneasylum.bsky.social.
Big thanks to Mathieu and @sendoshi.bsky.social for having me on board, and of course to Kelsey Dionne for such an amazing game !
Cover art in the style of a vintage comic book. A the bottom of a twisted staircase, a bold women clad in armor and wearing a white hooded cloak is holding a torch, a sword in her free hand, guiding her party inside an dark dungeon. She's followed by a goblin wizard holding an orb and a stout bearded warrior weilding a war hammer. On the foreground, a moustached elf is struggling to read a map. In the background an elf archer is about to shoot a weird winged creature emerging from the shadows. All around them, the dungeon is teeming with menacing creatures of all kind. Gargoyles, giant insects, distorted things with tentacles and many eyes. High above, the dungeon entrance looks like a gaping maw. There's a little rabbit scurrying inside its hole in the bottom right corner, reminding of the brand's name "Rabbit hole".

The Party Tree - happy belated birthday Bilbo!
Watercolour and acryla gouache on paper

One of my Tolkien-inspired works. If you're here because you enjoyed the Smaug I painted for Magic: The Gathering, I have more where that came from!
A hobbit leaves his home in the dead of night, he carries a backpack and sets out on a journey. In the background, we see a lively birthday party under a well-lit tree, and a sky full of fireworks.

DOWN NORTH, WHERE NO ONE GOES

My cover for an incredibly lovely book by @ramonkey.bsky.social and @aickmanwill.bsky.social , scheduled for digital debut on October 10th and then physical release during this year’s Thought Bubble fair!

Hey, thanks a lot ! I might suggest the idea to the publisher... 👀

Thank you ! I wanted to add something odd to the armor.

Definitely ! It's hard not to think of Lolth when working on such creatures.

It’s getting harder and harder to make a living as a visual artist. If you want to live in a world where human made art still exists, pay artists, please.

Fuck me this is bleak.
But please, do continue to use GenAI slop thumbnails for your YouTube videos, or your album art, or your book covers or whatever else. I'll continue to refuse to watch/listen/read any of them, knowing already they're not worth the time & that you're a disappointing lazy hack.
‘Children's book illustrator isn't a job anymore.’
I've been out of work for a while now. I made children's book illustrations, stock art, and took various art commissions.

Now I have several maxed out credit cards and use a donation bin for food. I haven't had a steady contract in over a year. two weeks ago, when a client who has switched to AI found out about this he gave me $50 out of "a sense of guilt." Basically pity for the fact that Illustrator, as a job, does not exist anymore.

It was my birthday recently and I sincerely considered not living anymore.
The worst part of all is that the parents who once supported me fully in being an artist sent me an AI generated picture of a caricature of themselves holding a birthday cake with my name spelled incorrectly.

Glad to read that ! Thank you for sharing. 😉

Having a blast with Silksong, which is completely unrelated to the making of this picture... or is it ? 🕸️
Fantasy illustration in a graphic novel style. A ritual is taking place in a dark temple. At the center of the picture is a towering hybrid. The upper half of its body is one of an elven woman with alabaster skin and bright red eyes. Three of her six arms are weilding bronze swords while two others are incanting a spell. She's wearing a tiara. Strands of her hair are woven into a metal hoop, circling her head like an aura forming web-like patterns. The lower half of her body is one of a monstrous spider with sharp legs and green teal joints. She's nested upon a pile of skulls, guarding an archway. The strange red light pouring from the othe side contrasts with the dark blue hues of the room. Columns and grotesque sculptures of elves with spider limbs can be seen in the shadows. Naked elves are gathering around, burning incense and prostrating before the spider queen.

Well spotted ! I just went with the flow imagining a vengeful spider-goddess for a Sword and Sorcery setting... With a nightmarish lot of limbs and attacks per round. 👀
