🎉 New in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science: “Challenges in assessing Fire Weather changes in a warming climate.”

We quantify a ~65% rise in extreme fire‑weather days (1980–2023) and show common daily‑proxy methods can overestimate trends by up to 10%.

Our findings stress the need for sub-daily meteorological data in future climate model experiments (e.g., CMIP7) to ensure more accurate wildfire projections. Check out our preprint and data, and let us know your thoughts!

We analyzed global Fire Weather Index (FWI) trends from 1980–2023 and found that using daily meteorological approximations inflates the number of extreme fire weather days. This can lead to an overestimation of wildfire danger in climate projections.

Excited to share our new preprint on challenges in estimating the Fire Weather Index with climate models!

Daily approximations can overestimate extreme fire danger by up to 10%.

Fire danger likely overestimated in future climate projections
The Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) is widely used to assess wildfire danger and relies on meteorological data at local noon. However, climate models often provide only daily aggregated data, which ...

🔥📊 2024: A Record Year for Extreme Fire Weather 📊🔥

2024 has set a new record since 1979, with 9 more days of extreme Fire Weather Index (FWI) conditions than any previous year in the ERA5 dataset.

#ClimateChange #Wildfires #FireWeather #FWI #ClimateCrisis #ERA5 #ExtremeEvents
The bars represent FWI anomalies (days above the 95th percentile) from ERA5 data, colored by temperature anomalies.

2024 stands out as the year with the highest number of extreme FWI days since 1979.

The data suggest a strong link between rising temperatures and an increasing frequency of extreme fire weather conditions.

The FWI is a meteorological index that indicates how favorable conditions are for fire spread and intensity, driven by temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
