There is much talk of AI in warfare, but rather less progress in applying it usefully to naval tactics. In this short piece for The Naval Review I reviewed a recent German effort. There is some way to go yet...

One reason why the SSBN, when it first arrives, presents something of a challenge to the US in terms of how to employ it for reassurance and deterrence at the same time.

Boeing handed over the first German P-8A for Marineflieger naval aviation to the Bundeswehr procurement office, at an event in Seattle. No information on when the aircraft will transfer to Germany, but presumably soon.

*if we take the comment at face value. Whole different story about his points, but nonetheless kind of interesting to see that reference at that moment.

No. Sheer cost, crew requirements, lack of parts, maintenance & ops experience etc.. A good read on future combatants though.

President Trump's specific mention of how he liked the Victory at Sea series is an odd reminder of how impactful the series was at the time.

Is Trump’s Call For Putting Battleships Back In The Navy's Fleet Even Feasible?
Trump wants battleships back in the Navy's inventory, and that may be far-fetched, but his remarks do highlight real deliberations around the future of surface combatants.

While a Neptune does not remotely compete in the same range class thus does constitute the same sort of threat having a few hundred of these rather than a few (low digit) Tomahawks would have its use too.

e.g. getting a full FP-5 Flamingo production line going. Presumably Tomahawk does have better precision, can fly lower thus giving it some degree of better survivability, beyond that though they would be similar in terms of effect. And there would be more of them.

The Air Launched ones were carried by B-52s, not really an option here. I doubt a Su-24 could carry one...
marcusfaulkner.bsky.social
Genuine question here beyond, how would the Tomahawks be launched by 🇺🇦? A Typhon battery? Given the availability of missiles, let alone launchers, any transfer would be an exceedingly expensive and limited one. Those resources might have better impact elsewhere.

the Baltic, North Sea and Atlantic approaches is needed. Vessels of certain origin need to be comprehensively tracked. That doesn't necessarily require tailing by surface warships all the time.

Could I interest you in some Type 26s.... Joking aside swapping out a design for an incomplete AAW platform to be adjusted for ASW work and maybe in service in 10 years is not ideal. The fleet plan increasingly looks like a mess, more an ambitious shopping list than reflecting pressing needs.

He got more concrete later on:

'Wir verbessern die Lageerfassung im Orbit durch Radare, Teleskope und durch den zukünftigen Einsatz von Wächtersatelliten.'

So if we assume with Wächter he means Guardian in the US sense of an orbital capability it would be a significant step up in ambition.

„From satellite images we can determine that they are around 40-42m long, do not appear to have traditional submarine sails, and have X-form rudders. Strong circumstantial evidence links one of the two vessels to the 705 Research Institute, part of 🇨🇳China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSSC).“
