It has been a very mild autumn on the West Coast of Sweden. With the stunning sun rise comes the first frost of the season. #Sweden

Always interesting to see how other authors write - László Krasznahorkai’s manuscript. #booksky

I may not have any novels by the new Nobel Laureate, but I’ve just discovered I have this interview of his in the Paris Review in the Summer of 2018. He ends by saying he isn’t going to write any more novels - looks like that didn’t happen. Always a risky prediction for anyone who is a novelist.

19 books by John Berger. There are more on other shelves - seeing and photography are mixed in with art books. Pig Earth is one of my favourites - just brilliant.

Well known over here in New Zealand. In fact, as the story from the back cover shows, she could be found by a letter simply addressed to ‘Maggie, New Zealand’.

Just in case proof were needed, I am a bit of an Ian McEwan fan. Remember reading my first one in 1982. #Booksky

One of his paintings from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, seen last month. So many visitors it was hard to always get a straight photo. Love the way these illuminated shop fronts still draw you in like they did the customers at the time.

I love the little section in this article about Woolf’s book on Walter Sickert. I have an original copy of this from 1934. The cover design is by Vanessa Bell.

WRITERS!! Is this a thing now? Do we need a little sticker on the front of our work to say “Human Written”? FFS

I agree - but try and take in some nikau palms as well.

This is one of Bruton’s other books. Also brilliant. While Goodreads isn’t the only arbiter of book popularity, I cannot understand why these three masterpieces in the art of short fiction have only gathered 325 ratings between them. #booksky #art #fiction

Books I read in August included these two superb titles by Scottish author Douglas Bruton. Both short, easy to read and utterly compelling (especially if you love the combination of art and literature) . #booksky Short 🧵

I’ve read the first two volumes of this and can’t wait for volumes III & IV. They are published on 18th November… and I’ve just realised that is the day in which the main character, Tara, has been stuck for the last two years. #booksky

Here is the departing warrior that is leaving the beautiful lady behind. Love that eye on his shield. #art #archeology

There are hundreds of lekythoi in the National Archaeological Museum so it took me ages to find this one in particular. Have been in love with the beauty of this lady since I was a young man, so how wonderful to see the whole vase. c450BC by the Achilles Painter.

This is a hunting scene from the Bayeux Tapestry, from the later 1000s

The birds around the edge reminded me of some others that are used as edge detail…

This elk antler was carved in the mid-1000s. Interesting observation about the detail 🧵
