Hi everyone! Thought I'd introduce myself to the Blue Sky community. I'm a clinical psychology post doc at Brown. I study implementation science, which looks at how to get treatments that work out to more people.

Here is NIMH

There were 51% as many new R01s in FY25 as in FY24.

Note the large increase in RF1 multi-year awards.

After a rollercoaster of a year of delays from NIH disruptions (literally the length of a pregnancy), it is such a relief to have this promotion processed. It’s incredibly exciting to be entering into this new stage of my professional career and my personal life this month.

Some professional and personal announcements!

I’ve been promoted to Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University!

We’re also expecting our baby boy later this month!

Appendix has a list of what skills were modeled in each book. A few of our favorites books:
-Sam Wu is Not Afraid Series by Katie Tsang and Kevin Tsang
-King of the Bench: No Fear! by Steve Moore
-Worry Warriors Series by Marne Ventura and Leo Trinidad
-Fuzz the Little Sheep Series by Inger Maier
margaretcrane.bsky.social
We found:
-Characters modeled 2.39/8 practices
-Cognitive strategies (60% of books), exposure (46%), and labeling body sensations (42%) were the most frequently modeled
-Perhaps unsurprisingly, books written by mental health professionals modeled more skills.

Like using children's books to teach kids about emotions? Check out our publication! We reviewed children's books on anxiety to identify how often characters modeled evidence-based practices. See the appendix for a list of what skills were modeled in each book

APCs are particularly brutal for trainees and ECRs whose grants have too small of budgets to accommodate unexpected open access fees (e.g., F‘s, T32s, K’s)
margaretcrane.bsky.social
How are folks handling this change in NIH open access policies? Submitting to journals that comply with the new NIH policy for immediate release without requiring an open access fee?
stephaniemlee.bsky.social
NEW: The NIH just started requiring NIH-funded research to be made freely, immediately available. In response, some journals are forcing scientists to pay thousands in open-access fees to publish.

The result: chaos. The fees, one scholar says, are “out of control.” www.chronicle.com/article/maki...

Strange trend for researchers to be aware of: participants are using Chat GPT to respond to open-ended questions at the end of surveys. Be sure to look for common indicators of GenAI before coding qualitative data (e.g., numbered lists, double asterisks, etc.)

Congrats! This is so exciting!

It is a wild time to be an NIH funded researcher. This grant has been pending since December 2024 (submitted June 2024). I am incredibly grateful for the mentors, colleagues, friends, and family who supported me through this rollercoaster of a year.
margaretcrane.bsky.social
I'll be working with a dream team of mentors - A. Rani Elwy, Alex Dopp, Aaron Lyon, Bo Kim, David Mohr, Will Aldridge, and Joshua Kemp.

We hope to learn about how digital mental health organizations, mental health providers, intermediary organizations, and purveyor organizations scale their impact.

he goal is to help organizations balance priorities, including implementing evidence-based interventions, being financially sustainable, and providing equitable access to care. The project will use human-centered design and qualitative/mixed methods.

Looking at grant reporter, it seems like the NIMH is focusing on issuing NOAs for grant renewals. In August, they issued 393 NOAs, of which only 23 were for new projects

The House discretionary budget bill is now out for FY26, including a proposed *slight boost* in NIH funding & many other components that will take time to unpack.

House LHHC bill is out. Lots of hits to HHS, but the top line number for NIH is 1% decrease, mostly due to cuts ARPA-H. This seems like a huge rejection of the president's budget request.
