It went so well. Amazing students explaining how they’ve been involved in the research project on palaeoclimate data from coal through their BSc course at #UniSvalbard this spring to the King and Queen of Norway. And we ended the day with a reception at the Royal yacht!

Ready for the king of Norway. Two students will present our work on coal as a palaeoclimate archive to the King today.

I’m so sorry. The world at it’s worst.

Anti-science & anti-LGBT+ forces have the same ideological root.

How are #LGBT+ scientists affected & how can you help?

For #PrideMonth I wrote about cause, effect & actions towards greater inclusion, for @egu.eu : blogs.egu.eu/geolog/2025/...

Summer in the Arctic. And delicious cake from a student, who finished her internship on the carbon cycle in an arctic delta with me.

Coal mining was the heart and soul of Longyearbyen and now it’s coming to an end. The last mine closes in a couple of weeks. But my daughter got to perform at the open day yesterday for people from town for a last visit to the mine #gruve7remix

Outreach projects as part of the assessment for the course “Arctic climate change - from the past to the future” at #UnisSvalbard. What a day. I’ve rarely had so much fun in an exam situation. For example this movie created by students. youtu.be/GBITtLhvQwc?...

Lucky me, who’s one of the scientist protagonists in an amazing childrens book about research in the Arctic. Yesterday we celebrated the first books coming from printing with author Maria Rossi.

See you another year.

Tomorrow I’ll present our new coastal landform dataset from Svalbard at #EGU25 in session OS2.4, room 1.61/1.62, 14-15:45.
We have mapped out the entire coastline of the Svalbard archipelago in 1:30.000 and it’s openly available here: doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANG...
mariaansine.bsky.social
Yes, I’ll be there and hopefully more people interested in fieldwork.

Are you a field scientist going to #EGU25 next week. Join the discussion at our union symposium on how to do inclusive and safe field work and what structures can be put in place locally, nationally and internationally to support this.

Yesterday I revisited Mel Gibson's drunken phone calls from when he became a convicted abuser and they sounded a lot like this. "I am focusing on terrorizing you while you should be focused on thanking me."

'Just say thank you': Lutnick says Canada is acting like Ukraine

nationalpost.com/news/canada/...
Lutnick: Think about it. The biggest trading partner in the whole world that is vital to Canada’s existence says, “I’m unhappy,” and they respond negatively, you know why? Because for 20 years, 30 years, they’ve gotten away with it. It’s like Ukraine. They came in. You imagine coming into this country, sitting in the Oval Office, having received $300 billion in aid from U.S. and military and NATO and all the rest, and the first words out of your mouth aren’t thank you. Just say thank you. God knows, just say thank you. When the biggest client, the biggest trading partner, the most important counter-party you have, who really, really matters to you, the first thing you do is showing immeasurable respect. Say, “Thank you. I want to work it out with you. I want you to be happy.”

Gorgeous field day yesterday with our new BSc course “Arctic climate change - from the past to the future” (AG-223). #UNIS #Svalbard

I take it as a chance to reach a slightly broader audience than is possible otherwise. Yesterday I gave a very well attended (also by non-scientists) talk about women in science highlighting some of the many career issues. Does it change anything? Maybe not. But maybe it opens a few people’s minds.
mariaansine.bsky.social
Yes, great programme and colleagues from #UNISvalbard organizing. I’m not attending, though. I’ll be in the field with students.

Great article that explain many of the subtle and not so subtle reasons why women are not moving forward in academia at the same rate of men.

“In 2011, I completed a PhD in...chemistry, with 10 papers to my name, five as first author. You might assume that was a foundation for academic success. Instead, I left #academia, becoming another statistic in the leaky pipeline, where 39% of chem PhD grads are women, yet only 9% are professors.”
