Pritzker: "It's unconscionable. This has never happened before. They're calling out troops onto the streets of a state that doesn't want them and they're not even telling us where they're gonna go, what they're gonna do. This hasn't happened I don't think since the Civil War."

I met lots of other academics I knew through academic twitter for a coffee, or connected with them at conferences because we knew each other from twitter... also, there are tons of events i only know about through instagram.

Hi! We're an interdisciplinary group from Córdoba, Argentina, studying human cognition. The lab is leaded by Dr. Pablo Barttfeld (@pablobarttfeld.bsky.social), and our research focuses on three main areas: consciousness, metacognition & attention. Follow us to get all lab's news!

This weekend I gave another workshop on #ShamelessSelfPromotion and now you all can apply what I am preaching by self-nominating as new Max Planck Director, for example in psycholinguistics

Go for it, especially if you think you aren't 'good enough'

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... insane that it is allowed for a lawyer to lie so blatantly and simply state that Gisèle Pelicot consented when Dominique Pelicot admitted online that she was drugged, and "advertised" it as such with the person accused
Gisèle Pelicot returns to court after trial made her an icon - and tore her family apart
A rift has emerged between Gisèle Pelicot - the victim at the centre of the largest rape trial in French history - and her eldest children

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

CW: depression, ideation (& the brain)

Case study: stimulation of the sustantia nigra produces acute, intense depression that dissipates as soon as stimulation stops. Wow.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17561432/

(FYI: In follow-up, the individual had no mood issues 5 yrs out; whew!).
Within a couple of seconds, the patient’s face showed an expression of utmost sorrow and he started to sob and cry violently. He repeated over and over again the words ‘‘everything is so dark’’, ‘‘please doctor I don’t want to live.’’ Upon direct questioning, the patient said that he felt very depressed. The stimulation was stopped, and within 10 s, the patient stopped crying and returned to his previous mental status.

I am wondering, I know plenty openly queer neuroscientists, but are there also openly polyamorous neuroscientists? I can think of examples of more senior people who are but I would not say openly

people aren't just going to give me money to do whatever I like in any job, so I don't think that academia is any worse in that regard.

and that funders can set research topics (by issuing calls on a question which interests them) rather than us being able to do the science we find most useful - which is both understandable from a funder's perspective and not great for scientists who might feel restrained.

i think a part of it is also her frustration at how difficult it is to establish yourself permanently (which is valid),

I noticed that in part (e.g., in her videos on gender) she broadcasts her pub opinion but prefaces it as the actual and only scientifically grounded view on the topic ("let's see what the science really says" type, based on some cherry-picked studies) which i find kind of weak

Postdoc affordability index for ERC starting grants (based on Eurozone inflation)

While in 2014, the fixed 1.5 mil EUR budget amounted to 9.84 theoretical 3-postdoc positions, in 2024 we are at 6.67, that's 32.3% loss in purchasing power.

I will just leave it here.

It was a true pleasure to work on this piece with @niccolonegro.bsky.social. I learned A LOT about possible justifications for inferring consciousness in other systems/organisms. I hope you will enjoy it too!
