My standard pinned post: I'm a writer of articles about film, history, culture, geography etc. I produce documentaries at Lonely Tower Film & Media and I've authored 3 history books. I'm also photographer, mostly of landscapes, industrial stuff, and urban scenes.

a scene of Redcar with a building to the left and a wall to the bottom creating leading lines to a focal point where 2 children distantly play. In the background is the sea with wind turbines visible A boat in a bay at Plockton, Scotland. The light is golden and shining on houses and trees in the mid-ground. The background shows a mountain range. The old bridge at sligachan, Isle of Sky. It's a small stone humpbacked bridge over a river, with three arches. In the background the sun is setting and it's hazy with rain - the mountains are almost purple silhouettes. In the far distance 3 tiny hikers can be seen against the light. Green wooden fisherman's huts are off to the mid-right. There's long dune grass in the bottom half of the image. The sky is a dirty blue and there's a powerline running along it, off to the left.

I mean, it’s one banana Michael, what could it cost?
A screen shot of a fake banana for sale from West Elm for $50.

My ex- neighbour had a sticker that said “Sadiq Khan is not my mayor “. And he was right because we lived in Kent.

Yer da’s been decorating the zafira
POV: you are stuck in London traffic behind a 2008 Vauxhall minivan adorned with various right wing slogans including “RIP LONDON KHAN AND STARMER GAVE FCUKED YOU! HONK IF YOU HATE EM!” & “Starmer stop the boats”. The license place is “RIP BE” and there are pictures of a demonic looking Keir Starmer and Sadiq Khan adorning the bumper and rear window. England and Union Jack flags fly from the rear windows

A lot of you commented on this picture when I posted it alongside some of my other black and white photographs, so I thought I'd post it on its own 😊

a matte, black and white photograph of tall, thin trees with bare trunks for most of the way up and then some evergreen foliage at the top. The day is misty and not much in the distance can be seen other than more silhouetted, mostly bare trunks

I've been so crazily busy that I totally forgot to mention that I have an article in the autumn edition of This England magazine in which I try to condense the complicated & weighty history of the Stockton & Darlington Railway into a four page article, whilst also plugging our documentary!

#History
the first 2 pages of the S&DR article with lots of text and pictures. I can't put the text into the alt as the image isn't meant to have you read the text it's just promo for the article! the second 2 pages of the S&DR article with lots of text and pictures. I can't put the text into the alt as the image isn't meant to have you read the text it's just promo for the article!

Not commenting on the original post/poster/argument here, but what I will say about gut feelings is they generally come from years of experience of whatever the thing may be. My 'gut' is almost always right, even when I cant initially articulate why, because it isn't a random feeling.

isn't that the point of it being a camera in the first place though? You can look out of it to see who it is without it needing to store faces.

them fail english? that's unpossible.

When I am queen of the world it will be jail for life to have a thing you need to do/start using immediately, and the training to do that thing scheduled weeks away.

I guess I'm saying if you try to fight fire with fire, your house just burns faster.

If these symbols (flags in this instance) are so 'balanced' and can be reclaimed, then why have extremists been able to use them to instil fear and division so easily? It's because of the weight of history they already carry. You can't sticky-plaster over that with a slogan.
mariegardiner.bsky.social
This is the crux of it. You can't flip a narrative using the same symbols and rhetoric that have been used for centuries of oppression, that are inherently linked with colonialism and 'otherness'. I have respect for people trying to do something positive but those people also need to *listen*.

We get the meaning but you can’t unpack centuries of oppression by having more flags

Southerness Lighthouse, Scotland (2024)

#ThePhotoHour #Photography
A squareish white lighthouse on rocks with rust and dirt all over. There's a balcony around the top but mostly on the other side of us. In the background is the sea, and the sky is pretty grey and flat
