🆕 Today, UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the UK.
There is currently no evidence of wider circulation in birds or mosquitoes, and the risk to the public remains very low.

Read the full preprint for more outbreak reconstruction, reproduction numbers, and lots of methodological details! Huge thanks to all co-authors and everyone involved in data collection and testing 🙌

▶️Taking into account the multi-host context of diseases is crucial for outbreak prediction and intervention planning.
▶️(Novel) computational approaches capable of integrating diverse data types are essential to leverage the growing availability of novel data streams.

What? Our models showed that blackbirds were NOT the only contributor to Usutu transmission and other species are needed to sustain transmission. Through model comparison we characterized these other species as having lower infection mortality and longer lifespans than blackbirds
marikendewit.bsky.social
🖥️How? We used multiple wildlife surveillance data sources on Usutu virus and integrated these with transmission models which varied in the types of host species involved.
marikendewit.bsky.social
💡Why? To make accurate outbreak predictions and design response strategies it is important to know which species are involved in transmission and what their role is. However, figuring out multi-host transmission from epi data is complicated, especially in wildlife.

🔔New preprint highlighting a huge collaborative effort! We show the importance of silent reservoirs in Usutu virus transmission in NL. The work has featured in talks at Epidemics, SVEPM, and ModAH so you might have heard (but not read!) about it before 😉 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

🔔This shows that the effectiveness of potential interventions, focused on preventing introductions or reducing within-LTCF transmission, varied over the course of the outbreak. Adaptive intervention planning might be the way to go!
marikendewit.bsky.social
Take-aways:
- Within-LTCF transmission was substantially reduced after vaccination roll-out in LTCFs.
- Contributions to infection risk in residents varied over the course of the outbreak.
marikendewit.bsky.social
Contribution to infections in residents changed: as vaccination was rolled out in care homes, the general pop became the main contributor. But when vaccination became available to everyone (+- summer '21) this declined and contributions looked similar again to the pre-vax period.
marikendewit.bsky.social
📈What? We found that resident-directed reproduction numbers from all three groups fell as vaccination was rolled out in the elderly and health care worker populations (but increased again later).
marikendewit.bsky.social
🖥️How? We explored contributions to the FOI in LTCF residents from 1) residents themselves, 2) health care workers, and 3) the general population using a Bayesian GLM.
marikendewit.bsky.social
💡Why? The effectiveness of interventions depends on whether it correctly targets the main source of infections: introductions into LTCFs or within-LTCF transmission. So it is important to know the sources of infections in residents to inform intervention policy.

We're looking for a new book for the 2025 edition of our infectious disease epi book club! Really enjoyed working through 'statistical rethinking' this year 📖 Anyone on here with suggestions for stats/modelling books? #IDModelling #AcademicSky
