instantly brings me to tears, but I'm glad she didn't have to see all this happen. was always her worst nightmare to live in a world like this. will have to try and do something about it. ❤️🪽
Philadelphia is underrated. Feel like NYC should have a closer relationship.

'socialist' and 'communist' don't mean the same thing either, even though many employ those terms somewhat interchangeably. stickler for terms..

wondering how to differentiate American 'democratic socialist' from more international 'social democrat'

they're considering 'special economic zones' but why not something closer to a 'special administrative region' or 'semi-autonomous province' etc. somehow keep getting surprised at how unimaginative 'leaders' are at coming up w/ solutions for geopolitical problems, particularly ones we've seen before

'unusual' is such a deeply pathetic way to describe any of the ridiculous things they do every day

we should have a law, at least in the city if not elsewhere, like France does, that prohibits supermarkets and other establishments from throwing out edible food. the amount of perfectly edible waste this city produces is absurd. some is composted, but could be used to stock food banks that need it

the most compelling thing I remember learning in intro econ classes in college is opportunity cost--the idea that the cost of doing one thing is not doing something else (for better or worse) with the same resources. that blew my mind and made me really question every decision since..

we need more immigrants, that's the fuel. everything goes to shit without them. they revitalize communities, create jobs, do essential work like health care and agriculture, etc, etc..

Maybe it's in the paper, but the financial crisis and the GOP's response to Obama's election seem like obvious factors that might make 2008 an inflection point.
A new PNAS paper finds that polarization increased immediately after the invention of smartphones and the advent of social media, which both appeared around the same year, 2008.

a third of the country was French (St Louis, Nouvelle-Orléans) thanks to the Haitian Revolution and Napoleon cutting his losses. Another third is basically Mexican/Spanish on the west side (see: the name of everything).

I had a friend from Australia, like all Australians, that was descended from someone convicted and deported from England. I think his ancestor stole some pantaloons or something in London and that's how he wound up there. History.
