Aaliyah Staples-West, a second year PhD student in our lab, had the opportunity to share her exciting new work with the @hhmi-science.bsky.social community this week.

Was really fun and meaningful for me to have her join the meeting. (Thx HHMI & ASW).

Go Aaliyah!

First day back in the classroom with @riseupneo.bsky.social since study section and grant selection! This group of students anesthetized Drosophila and learned how to maintain stocks. Others worked with C. elegans and earthworms, depending on the project goals. Exciting!!!!

Next weekend, members of our lab are hosting a Teach-In! Open to everyone, in person and virtual.

Come learn about the brain inside your gut and what happens when misinformation and defunding threaten research

We are so fortunate that Aaliyah is part of our team!
September 29, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Aaliyah says she "couldn't have asked to be a part of such an amazing lab community! My mentor and labmates strive for greatness and push me to be the best version of myself. The amount of support here has been incredible!"
September 29, 2025 at 5:39 PM
After earning her PhD, Aaliyah is open to either academia or industry, depending on where she feels she can make the most impact. She thinks it would be fun to work in a niche area that blends science with something unexpected, like creating iPSC-derived food
September 29, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Outside of the lab, Aaliyah likes to work out, go on new adventures with friends, volunteer, and attend the orchestra. She thinks Cleveland is full of hidden gems, a city full of surprises.
September 29, 2025 at 5:39 PM
She is excited to grow into an independent scientist who can make a positive impact. Aaliyah says she has learned the value of balancing hard work and rest - both are necessary and rewarding.

Meet the lab!

Aaliyah Staples-West is a second year PhD student studying how the nervous system in the human gut develops. Aaliyah says that being in the PhD program at CWRU has sharpened her critical and analytical thinking.
