Reports in @telegraphnews.bsky.social that UK Govt will accept Trump's demands to pay more for medicines - by pledging a % of GDP. That would be another chunk of a dwindling NHS budget already pledged to a very long list of things. What could we get for it? www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

The Government hopes the new 10 Year Plan can repeat the NHS miracle of the 2000s. But this newer new Labour government has less money, and bigger targets. What can we expect? For @@thehousemag.bsky.social with Siva Anandaciva and ‪@davefinch.bsky.social‬

The #NHS is already stretched beyond the financial limit. If it is to spend more on the same medicines in order to save other sectors from tariffs, that reduces the money for healthcare goals - whether that's staff pay, waiting times, or digitisation www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

So what are the takeaways from @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social address to @nhsconfed.org today? 1) a significantly more partnership-based approach to the leadership & staff of the #NHS. Good. They are crucial to delivery of any plan

Our statement notes this may allow councils to keep up with social care demand, but note a lot of this is coming from big assumed council tax rises - 5% a year! Important gradual shift in how we pay for long term care in England, to quite a weird property tax. Nothing for major reform

Local govt ends up being an area that comes out better than some during the SR:

Average annual increase in spending power of 2.6% per year in real terms between 25/25 and 28/29

Will leave spending power 2.7% lower in real terms than in 2010/11 and 15.9% lower when accounting for population growth

The NHS is very skint right now, and has also just had to promise the pharma industry a review on the VPAG scheme from which the public sector was set to rake in massive cashback savings. If Trump has any success driving UK and US prices together, it will really call into question what we can afford
markgdayan.bsky.social
It's not just social care. The pledge to raise thresholds and the end of the Immigration Salary List mean a growing range of #NHS staff roles won't qualify for skilled worker visas. Is the workforce situation healthy enough to be ready for that? assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6821ae...

The NHS is already facing challenges to getting the medicines it needs, and the prospect of US #tariffs only adds a further dimension. A trade deal could offer a way out, but the negotiations would not be without risk.

It's probably good that this Secretary of State is leaning away from intervention, but the closure of a single GP surgery or of 7 individual beds being referred to him is *exactly* what we warned would happen and not a sensible way to run a health system www.hsj.co.uk/service-rede...

All in all, the UK is taking a very inconsistent approach – edging closer to the EU in some ways, but further away in others. Perhaps we’re picking our course wisely. But it means that while Brexit has been a drag in many areas, we’re also ruling out a wholesale realignment

Medicines shortages are the crisis that never stops. Three years after this began to get scary for patients, it may even have worsened in 2024, based on firms warning of impending shortages. This isn’t unique to the UK, but we face being left behind as the EU comes up with big plans to fix it
