This should be a sobering chart for the Alberta oil industry and @ABDanielleSmith.

Canada is the 4th largest oil producer in the world. China is the 5th largest.

China's official policy is now to increase oil production even further to reduce exposure to volatile global prices.
January 23, 2026 at 7:44 PM
This is exactly what political scientist @duanebratt.bsky.social warned about in my interview with him yesterday.

youtu.be/9aX6Hl3Y28Q

MAGA is coming for Alberta. Canadians, especially patriotic Albertans, need to push back hard.
January 23, 2026 at 6:12 PM
The ignorance of Alberta separatists is astonishing.

Having 170 billion barrels of oil is NOT the same as being able to sell 170 billion barrels of oil.

Supply and demand, fellas, google it.
January 22, 2026 at 6:12 PM
Words to love by, fellow Canadians.

Let me leave you with this thought: the US Midwest usually has about 9 days of oil in storage.

Canada supplies 100% of Midwest oil imports.

9 days.

Think about it.

Donald Trump.

That's who is creating a "new world order." He's doing it by wrecking the old one.

Conservatives are embarrassing themselves by claiming otherwise.
January 17, 2026 at 3:04 PM
The narrative is that Canada's heavy crude goes mostly to the Midwest, with much lower volumes to USGC.

This S&P Global graphic suggests otherwise.

Can Venezuela's Merey push Canada out of the USGC?

Might be tough.

3 Chinese oil demand modelling studies (Sinopec, CNPC, Peking U) think China's oil consumption will fall from 17MM b/d today to 5.5MM b/d to 7.5MM b/d by 2050.

Low-cost Middle East producers ship oil to China, India for $2/b.

Alberta? $16/b.

Pipeline still a good idea?

January 13, 2026 at 7:57 PM
Groovy...so Chevron can increase output from 200,000 b/d to 300,000 b/d.

That should scare the hell out of the Alberta oil sands producers.
January 9, 2026 at 10:03 PM
Which public voices are serious about energy?

Where are the energy economists who should be leading the Canadian energy transition conversation?

The US has boatloads. Same with Europe.

Canadian economists are stuck in the 20th century, arguing about oil sands breakevens.

What do recent developments in Venezuela mean for oil markets, geopolitics, and energy security?

I'm live tomorrow at 11:00 am MT to answer your questions on what happens next.

Great cartoon. Know why it resonates?

Alberta oil bros want to produce as much oil as Russia and Saudi Arabia (9.2MM b/d vs AB's 4MM b/d today)...and have the economic and political clout that goes with it.

They are frustrated "masters of the universe."

Separatism is about power. Nothing more.

The fallacy behind this nitwit's comment is that Smith/UCP are just another political party.

Nope.

Smith is Trump. The UCP is MAGA.

She is "ungoverning" - ie breaking democratic institutions, blowing up the machinery of govt - Alberta.

Smith is unCanadian. She's gotta go.
December 20, 2025 at 1:35 AM
Smith can "be open" to shipping oil to Asia via an American port but that doesn't mean there are customers for Alberta's heavy sour crude.

Ask China about its oil demand forecast to 2060.

From 17MM b/d to 4-5MM b/d.

Oops.

Cheap, higher-density batteries are helping accelerate the electrification of global economies.

Electrification reduces demand for oil and gas.

Therefore, building a 1MM b/d pipeline to the West Coast and more LNG plants is stupid.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

The "Trump Corollary" (he probably pronounces it Corolla) of the Monroe Doctrine in action.

What the heck is all that?

Watch this Energi Media video: youtu.be/PKICDhRWNA0
December 17, 2025 at 4:44 PM
It all comes down to cost and energy security. Production from the country’s [coal] fields has been on the decline, leaving gas-fueled plants to depend on costlier imports of [LNG].

Utilities have been losing money when they run on LNG, so many decide not to run at all.

Karma's coming for this guy. Might take a while, but you can't be this evil without consequences eventually.
December 15, 2025 at 4:25 PM
There will always be Late Majority, Laggard adopters.

They're usually incumbents like oil producers, automakers, mining companies, electric utilities.

Supported by bought and paid for proxies like the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, the Fraser Institute, etc.

Sound familiar?
December 14, 2025 at 2:06 PM
Canada is having a 1995 conversation about energy.

Yesterday's House of Commons debate over the CPC motion re Canada-AB MOU is the classic example.

Join @Mcbreadner and I for a 9 am PT/10 am MT Live discussion of just how stupid the House debate really is.

Danielle Smith's stenographer speaks!

If you want a more data and evidence-based view of Alberta's pipeline fever dreams, Energi Media is providing it at:

1. www.youtube.com/channel/UCHZ...

2. markhamhislop.substack.com/publish/home

Repeat after me: there is no business case for the pipeline.
November 25, 2025 at 2:38 PM
If you think the Watergate burglars were dumb, you haven't met Rob Anderson, Vitor Marciano, and Brian Jean, and the rest of the inept political bunglers running Alberta's oil and gas strategy.

Do not discount the influence of stupidity.

Ideology, not expertise, rules in ABGov.
