Retired Australian now living in Melbourne (originally from Sydney). Progressive Aussie. Married, two adult sons, one grandson. Supporter of NRL Bulldogs and GWS Giants. Don't Trump at me!

Started life as a Labor supporter. Whitlam's dismissal outraged me at age 14. Labor's backroom deals & regular timidity had me looking for alternatives. Settled on the Greens as the best of a bad lot. Now thinking maybe no party at all is attractive. Feisty intelligent independents the go I reckon.

Amy Remeikis on Gough:
Lost in that analysis, and the lessons not learnt, is that we have his legacy because he didn’t bend. Because he knew that to compromise, to give in, would mean nothing ever changed.

Australian politics 101: Getting the lessons wrong every time
If one thing is true for all mainstream political parties, it’s that they will always learn the wrong lessons.

Stoke fear. Exploit desperation. Suspend the rule of law. Fan brutality.

Every time the stronger brutalize the weak, it’s fundamentally the same playbook.

Our duty is to stand up to brutality.

Our moral obligation is to protect the vulnerable and hold the powerful accountable.
