✨ LUCKY COINCIDENCES ✨ Have you ever come across a surprising, accidental discovery that felt meaningful and motivated you to further engage with it?
In our new paper now out in JASP (doi.org/10.1111/jasp...), we explore such serendipitous experiences in museums and beyond. 1/5 🧵
Lucky Coincidences: Experiencing Serendipity in Museums and Beyond
Serendipity is the unintentional, accidental discovery of something new or surprising that feels positive and meaningful for the individual. Four studies (N1 = 1638; N2 = 279; N3 = 520; N4 = 452) exa...

This was another fruitful collab with Deutsches Museum’s Lorenz Kampschulte, showing how practice & research can very productively inspire each other. Kudos also to 1st author Max Knabe who started this project with fellow students during his master’s and saw it all the way over the finish line! 5/5

🌡️ While experiencing serendipity shared similarities with other constructs such as feelings of insight and situational interest, it emerged as an empirically distinguishable concept of its own. Our scale overall demonstrated a coherent item structure and good internal consistency. 4/5
marlephie.bsky.social
👍Experiencing serendipity was largely independent of personality traits, demographics or structural aspects of a museum visit, but consistently related to interests and learning motivations. It predicted higher exhibition enjoyment and recommendation but not revisiting intentions. 3/5

In 4 studies (field surveys in a museum, autobiographical recall, experiment), we wanted to better understand predictors and consequences of serendipity, differentiate it from related concepts (e.g., insight, situational interest), and develop a sound measure to so. 2/5

Trust in science predicted protection intentions 😷 during the pandemic. But does this mean trust in science CAUSED protection intentions? 🤔

Yesterday at #FGSP2025, I presented our experimental work on this and got great feedback 🙌.

Thanks to @hansalves.bsky.social and @wilhelmhofmann.bsky.social for organizing such a great #FGSP2025 @ruhr-uni-bochum.de!

Thanks also for including a tour through the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum. Reminded me of the stories my grandfather told who worked as a miner in the region (see the pictures)

And, of course, @fabianhutmacher.bsky.social brilliantly mastered the task of presenting a theoretical paper about known unknowns in motivated reasoning in <15min. ;)
Thanks for everyone joining the symposium and discussing all these forms and flavors of motivated reasoning with us at #FGSP2025!

Kicking-off her PhD journey, @wagunyego.bsky.social talked about her initial findings capturing epistemic injustice and its relationship to trust in science. So many interesting avenues to go from here, more exciting stuff coming over the course of the next years of her dissertation. #SciReLab

This afternoon at #FGSP2025, @kduermeier.bsky.social presented insights into her dissertation work on legitimacy and trust in societal institutions. Specifically, she talked about the (lack of) effects of public participation in science and politics. Next study is underway - stay tuned! #SciReLab
