„Wenn Menschen an Verschwörungserzählungen glauben, dann haben sie ganz automatisch das Gefühl, über eine Art Geheimwissen zu verfügen“, sagt @rolandimhoff.bsky.social , Professor für Sozial- & Rechtspsychologie an der Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, am Telefon. „Sie fühlen sich erleuchtet…“

No one applies the most basic cognitive principles so beautifully to explain meaningful real-world phenomena like @hansalves.bsky.social. I'm a fan!

New paper in PsychScience: Partial election results fuel fraud beliefs via cumulative redundancy bias. Early leaders are favored; late flips spark suspicion. 7 studies, including 2020 GA data, show this persists despite explanations. @moritzingendahl.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

🚨New #openaccess paper🚨
A bit over two years ago, Aileen Oeberst and I published a call for more parsimony in bias research (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...). Shortly thereafter, another paper made a somewhat similar (albeit broader) proposition (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...)

Can pronouns override appearance?
Verena Heidrich from Mainz explores how people categorize gender when phenotypic cues and pronouns clash. Findings show that strong essentialist beliefs make people cling to binaries, subtyping non-binary identities instead of updating beliefs. #IntersectionalitySGM

In contrast, US Black participants showed only little differentiation between target races with even a slight tendency for greater ingroup categorization. This aligns with the view that marginalized groups may allocate greater cognitive resources to individuating members of dominant social groups.
rolandimhoff.bsky.social
Result from our registered Report suggest that minority and majority members do not lump the respective Outgroup and individuate the Ingroup (a cross-race effect) symmetrically. Specifically, White US American showed an greater categorization of Black than White targets in a Who-Said-What Paradigm.
Results for the d parameter of social categorization strength: White participants exhibit markedly greater categorization of Black compared to White target speakers. Black participants show an attenuated pattern i nthe same direction.

The Psychology of Conspiracy Mentality: https://osf.io/e4sn7

The paper has a taste of shameless self-citation-ism, but -to my defense- the journal seeks to publish "publishes theoretical chapters that review and integrate previously published findings of a research program by an individual scholar."

Our findings only partially supported this hypothesis, revealing a category of authoritarian, non-spiritual conspiracy adherents (approximately 6% of the samples), while spiritual conspiracy believers (about 3%) also displayed significant levels of authoritarianism. Paper: doi.org/10.1111/pops...
