Housewarming, if they’re just starting out, an enamelled dutch oven (lodge has them for <100 bucks).

If they’re drinkers, a good bottle of wine from a meaningful year in their lives - wedding, child, etc…

Else, a really fancy bottle of vinegar or honey

can I interest you in a Hay-On-Wye? More bookshops per capita than anywhere in the U.K., 30 min drive to the Brecon Beacons. Couple of excellent pubs and restaurants. Plus an annual literary festival

it’s the dream

England v France in Paris is being discussed as my final pre-baby day out with the boys (baby due in April). It’s only a sports desert for those without eyes to see.

Enjoy it! As a newly minted suburbanite(-ish), sufficiently walkable suburbs are awesome

it sucks! You have to pay VAT on houses now! 10 years ago you could buy a house in Corfu for 200k and no lawyers or tax advice and now… no way!

(also if you haven’t been, Corfu is incredible, go to corfu, eat everything, bask in glorious sun)
December 30, 2025 at 6:16 PM
where ya headed?
December 30, 2025 at 3:11 PM
not to be too generous to them, but I often feel the same way when Americans come to Europe and say “we have 8 days and we’re going to London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen” and it’s like… ok cool enjoy being on a train 80% of the time?
