A special thanks to the fly expert reviewers for helping us clarify a few points, including the late Scott Hawley, whose review was filled with the enthusiasm and generosity we all knew him for.

Molecular mechanism of condensin I activation by KIF4A | The EMBO Journal
imageimageHow loss of KIF4A chromokinesin reduces chromosome association of condensin has remained unclear. This study demonstrates that human condensin I is auto-inhibited by short linear motifs (SLi...

Overall we show that Mad3 acts outside of its checkpoint role to actively direct chromosome segregation.
January 6, 2024 at 9:10 AM
We found that Mad3 binds the Stu1 (CLASP) microtubule regulator through its degenerate TOGL1 domain. We showed that Mad3-Stu1 association rescues the segregation of chromosomes that lack crossovers or fail to biorient in meiosis I.

We discovered that in addition to its well known role in delaying the cell cycle as part of the spindle checkpoint, Mad3, has a separate role in promoting chromosome alignment on the spindle in budding yeast meiosis.
