Nineteen years ago, on October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated by Putin's hitmen.
She was the first to tell the truth about Russia's mass crimes in Chechnya, which foreshadowed those in Syria, Ukraine, Africa and elsewhere. They could have been prevented.
Almost no one listened to her.
If it happens it won't be led by Berlin and Paris... the most exciting less-than-27-game in town at the moment is the Spanish "competitiveness lab" effort I think.

Fantastic interview by @martinsandbu.ft.com with @michaelpettis.bsky.social

Arguably Pettis's understanding of the impact of Chinese industrial policy through trade is the single most important thing in economics you need to get to understand the world right now

New argument against AI regulation just dropped. Checkmate, atheists.

For about a year now, Thiel has been publicly laying out his understanding of biblical prophecies and the potential for the rapid advance of technology to bring about an apocalyptic future.

In a lecture Monday, he encouraged an audience to continue working toward scientific progress, whether in AI or other forms of technology. Fearing or regulating it, or opposing technological progress, would hasten the coming of the Antichrist, Thiel said, according to people who attended.
Maybe a swap line paid out in platinum coin.
Yes. This matched the reality when imports were heading towards 400k EVs per year. And it turns out it has fallen below that. But hey, China shock 2.0.
Ah, but Descartes got from solipsism to the scientific method in just a few steps. No such luck with these political nihilists.
How many cars is that - 20-25000 a month? So 250-300k/year? In a market of 10m/year?
And yet they keep looking for least risky options.

I like the @resfoundation.bsky.social's idea. But why not go the whole way and merge the two at the combined rate?

Report out on tax options for the Budget. 2p income tax rise alongside 2p national insurance cut would mean no tax rise for an employee whose income comes from a job. With employment overtaxed at the moment, workers pay packets should be protected and distortions in the tax system removed.
2p switch from National Insurance to Income Tax could raise £6 billion while protecting workers’ pay packets • Resolution Foundation
The Chancellor should protect workers’ pay packets and level the playing field on how different forms of income are taxed – including a 2p cut in employee National Insurance (NI) offset by a 2p rise i...

Most of what is happening in today’s transatlantic relationship is part of the culture war. But the time has come for Europeans to leave this artificial reality and become protagonists—not props—in their own show, writes @pawelzerka.bsky.social @ecfrpower.bsky.social @euroculture.bsky.social
