An honour to speak at the Canadian Club Toronto about Budget 2025 — our plan to catalyse $1 trillion in investment for Canadians.

We used to build big in Canada. It’s time to take risks and invest boldly in our future again.

Our freedom was won by brave women and men who answered the call — including the heroic First Nations, Inuit, and Métis members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

On Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the sacrifice of those who have served, those who serve today, and their families.

Toronto Harbourfront Centre is a space where people come together to share stories, create art, and build community.

Budget 2025 is building strong communities, and investing to build more places like this that bring us together and strengthen the bonds we share as Canadians.

This summer, Canada’s tourism sector did more business than ever before — by welcoming the world and being our own best customer.

More good news: we just renewed the Canada Strong Pass for the holidays and summer 2026 — so it’s more affordable to explore our incredible country.

Armored vehicles rumbling through alleys. Soldiers in military gear engaged in  combat. Bodies scattered on blood-slicked streets.

These could be scenes from a war zone.  But on October 28, they unfolded on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. https://cnn.it/49Ju2T8

We’re investing big to strengthen health infrastructure — building the hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centres, and medical schools across the country that Canadians rely on every day.

Pierre Poilievre sure had himself a time this week after the White House visit, blaming Mark Carney for everything under the sun - including sunburn.

By which I mean, the premiers have met and agreed that the federal government should be providing more funding for health care.

But that leads to questions about the utility of these "council of the federation" meetings.

If they're largely or primarily about asking or blaming the federal government for things, how much is really being accomplished?

Which is basically understandable.

If you lock ten premiers in a room and ask them to find agreement on something, the easiest things for them to agree about will be demands or complaints about the federal government.

One of the stronger arguments for regularized first ministers' meetings (meetings that include the prime minister) is that these "council of the federation" meetings (which only include premiers) just become focused on things the premiers want the federal government to do.

Let me put this another way:

Top reasons why Cdn-US tourism is down as seen by Canadians:

1. Forced annexation threats
2. Fear of arbitrary ICE arrest
3. General dismay @ new US
4. Tariffs, levied despite USCMA deal

Top reasons as seen by US media/govt:
1. Tariffs generally
2. 51 State 'jokes'
