The legislation also allows records to be withheld if they would jeopardize an active federal investigation. The Justice Department has already said the files it withheld contained images of victims, downloaded videos of illegal child sex abuse or materials that had been ordered sealed by a court.

The more I sit with it, this framing is bullshit. It wasn’t a “mess” that she was exploited at a young age by a much older man.

These senators are demonstrating a willful blindness that has become endemic in the Democratic Party. Their rhetoric — and the conventional wisdom that flows from it — suggests that we cannot talk about economic solutions without abandoning our commitment to the Black, Latino, gay, transgender and female poor that are the lifeblood of the Democratic Party’s base. The conceit at the heart of that belief is that poor white people are too racist, and too uniquely ignorant of their racism, to vote in their best interests. Therefore, Democrats have to accept a little racism to win the working class. It is an old argument. History will tell you that negotiating with racism or fascism or authoritarianism never ends well.

The memo said the agency will not draw on the funds because they are "not legally available" to cover the benefits and will reserve them for responding to natural disasters and other emergencies. "SNAP contingency funds are only available to supplement regular monthly benefits when amounts have been appropriated for, but are insufficient to cover, benefits. The contingency fund is not available to support FY 2026 regular benefits, because the appropriation for regular benefits no longer exists," said the memo.

The Marine Corps has long faced scrutiny over Scout Snipers’ use of SS-style insignia — a practice denounced by military officials and Jewish civil rights groups after photos emerged in 2012 showing Marines in Afghanistan posing with an SS flag. The Schutzstaffel or “SS” was a paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party responsible for many of the regime’s war crimes and atrocities during World War II. In 2012, the then Marine Corps Commandant, Gen. James Amos, apologized to “all offended by this regrettable incident,” adding, “I want to be clear that the Marine Corps unequivocally does not condone the use of any such symbols to represent our units or Marines.” Platner in the Reddit threads repeatedly argued that some US military members used the symbols in a different way and not to reference the Nazi units.
